Too Much Sylvia concert benefits scholarship fund

GOLD HILL — On April 30 Morgan Ridge Vineyards hosted the Too Much Sylvia benefit concert for Saving Grace Farm. More than 300 people were in attendance and over $8,000 was raised toward the Lillie B. Edwards Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will help provide services to people with special needs, and Veterans.
Guests participated in a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. The Queen City Corvette Club attended, bringing several of their Corvettes to the venue.

National Guild of Piano Teachers Audition
CHINA GROVE — The National Guild of Piano Teachers Audition was held at China Grove First Baptist Church on April 19 and 20.

Adjucator was Willa Carlton of Durham. A graduate of Benedict College, S.C., Mrs. Carlton has served as president and historian for the Durham Music Teachers’ Association, and also teaches piano in her private music studio.

The following piano teachers and their students participated: Dawn Merrell (Salisbury) – Abbey and Morgan Deaton; Tina Brown (Rockwell) –Gage Trexler, Hannah Davis, Diego Corona, Ashley Drye, Reagan Williams, Baleigh Trexler and Landon Motsinger; Marsha K. Carter (China Grove) – Will Bivens, Molly Burgess, Jordan Cline, Nadiya Wilson, Salem Fleming, Marielle Gordon, Ayden and Sawyer Basinger, Victoria Pennington, Micah McNeil, Andrew Carter, Riley Mabe, Savanna Bancroft, Addisyn Keen, Aden Castor, Ava and Drew Huffman, Nathaniel and Kandus Kimball, Abby Rodgers and Noah Dendy.

Students are judged on technique, dynamics, memory and musicianship. Repertoire classifications, in addition to memorization, include hobbyist, duet category, ensemble and jazz/pop auditions. Each student recieves a report card, a certificate of participation and a bronze, silver or gold award pin, depending of the number of pieces performed.

The following students from the studio of Marsha K. Carter, China Grove, were recognized for performing 10 memorized pieces for six years: Ayden Basinger and Addisyn Keen; and Nadiya Wilson for seven years.

 

Spencer Library hosts community event

SPENCER — The Spencer Public Library will host “Expressions of Life: Celebrate Community” on Saturday, May 19. This event which will feature Matt Weaver, the Moonglows, Patrick King and North Rowan High School students. The event is open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Local community organizations will be giving out free information, clothes and snacks. Organizations include: Communities in Schools, Engage North Rowan, the Family Crisis Council, Meals on Wheels, Triad Ladder of Hope, Prevent Child Abuse Rowan, Life Village, Boy Scouts, the Thelma Smith Foundation South Branch and Vocational Rehab. There will be face-painting and Joseph Heilig, street artist will be there.
