From staff reports

SALISBURY — Seeded 22nd in the 2A West bracket, Salisbury’s baseball team didn’t anticipate any home games in the playoffs, but the Hornets have one.

Salisbury (16-10) will host Hibriten tonight at 7 p.m. in a second-round contest.

Hibriten, seeded 27th, won at No. 6 Bunker Hill on Wednesday, while Salisbury was winning at No. 11 Bandys.

Hibriten (12-10) has a modest record, but it’s a senior-heavy team.

Salisbury used ace Jack Fisher as well as Griffin Myers on the mound to win   in the first round. That leaves the hurling tonight in the hands of Joe Steinman and Bo Rusher.

Myers, Rusher and Chandler Lippard are batting over .400. The Hornets have a team batting average of .314.

Tevin Williams and Noah Haney  swatted two-run homers for Hibriten in Wednesday’s game. Haney, the first baseman, is a football standout headed to Lenoir-Rhyne.

The winner plays the North-Davidson-Franklin winner in the third round. Salisbury would be on the road against either of those teams.

Carson pulled out its first-round game against West Rowan, 2-1, on a seventh-inning single by Clayton Gilmore and takes on Eden Morehead tonight at 7 p.m. in Round 2.

The fifth-seeded Cougars (22-5) will rely on lefty Maddux Holshouser (8-1) to pitch tonight’s game. Holshouser, headed to UNC Greensboro, has an ERA of 0.84 and has struck out 78 batters in 59 innings.

Luke Barringer has hit six of Carson’s eight homers. Owen White, a potential high MLB draft pick who pitched Wednesday, is batting .341 with 21 RBIs.

Morehead (20-8) is coming off a  dominating 6-1 victory against Gastonia Forestview in the first round.

Morehead, seeded 12th,  hasn’t shown  much power  and relies on good pitching and defense.

Morehead missed the playoffs the last two seasons but was a second-place team in its conference this year.

The winner takes on the Marvin Ridge-Weddington winner. Carson would host Weddington but would have to travel to fourth-seeded Marvin Ridge.

On Saturday at 7 p.m., East Rowan will play at Southwest Guilford in a 3A second-round matchup.

Ninth-seeded West Rowan plays at No. 8 Marvin Ridge tonight at 6 p.m. in a second-round 3A game.

Jessica Davis has powered eight homers for Marvin Ridge (19-4) and is batting .472.  Ally Bigham is batting .468 with five homers.

Next for the winner is a likely trip to No. 1 Parkwood. Parkwood is taking on No. 17 Rockingham County in Round 2.

Davie County hosts West Forsyth tonight in the 4A playoffs.
