Area Sports Briefs: Three Salisbury tennis players qualify for state

On Friday, Salisbury tennis qualified three players for state competition.

In the 2A Midwest Regional held in Salisbury, Jander Rodas won twice in singles to reach the regional semifinals.

Rodas topped players from Mount Pleasant and East Davidson. His semifinal opponent today will be Lexington’s Andy Casados.

Salisbury’s doubles team of Adam Drye/Roarke Burton also won two matches Friday to reach the regional semifinals.

Burton/Drye topped teams from  Atkins and West Davidson. Their semifinal opponent will be Forbush’s Matt Wilhelm/Lance Kennedy.

Salisbury’s doubles team of Ethan McGee/Sean Archer won one match before falling in the quarterfinals to a Ledford duo.

Salisbury’s Juan Salazar lost his first-round singles match.

Semifinals and regional championship matches are set for today. All of today’s participants have wrapped up berths in the state.

Prep basketball

Carson boys coach Brian Perry announced on Friday that Jamarius Hairston has been chosen to play in the East-West All-Star Game at Greensboro Coliseum on Monday, July 16.

Hairston, a 6-foot-4 wing player is the first Carson basketball player to be  chosen for the event and only the second Carson athlete. Brenden Westbrook played in the all-star football game last summer.

Hairston ranks second all-time in Carson scoring behind Darius Moose and is eighth in Rowan County history. He has signed with Lander.

Prep softball

Davie County was held to four hits and lost Friday’s Central Piedmont Conference Tournament championship game to third-seeded West Forsyth, 3-1.

Samantha Martin had three hits for the Titans. Alex Rodriguez struck out 11 War Eagles.

Prep track and field

Albemarle’s boys and Gray Stone’s girls took home the trophies in    the  Yadkin Valley Conference  Championships.

North Rowan’s boys finished third behind Albemarle and South Davidson.

NR’s Adrian Rudisell won the discus with a throw of 120 feet, 9 inches.

North Rowan was good in the relays, winning the 4×400, finishing second in the 4×200, and taking fourth in the 4×100.

Gregory Crawford was second in the 200. Alijah Broom was third in the 400, while Tykier Walker was third in the 110 hurdles.

Nautica Patterson was fourth in the shot put.

North Rowan’s girls finished seventh in the YVC Championships.

Takari Bailey was second in the triple jump.  Nia Perry was third in the long jump. Aniya Lucas was fourth in the triple jump. North took third place in the 4×200.

Carson, West Rowan, East Rowan and A.L. Brown  athletes will be competing in the 3A Midwest Regional at Greensboro Dudley on Friday, May 11. Salisbury and South Rowan athletes will compete on Saturday, May 12, in the 2A Midwest Regional at Surry Central.

North Rowan athletes will compete in the 1A Midwest Regional at North Stokes on May 12.

Intimidators

  Nolan Brown, Anthony Villa and Tate Blackman each had three hits, as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat  Hagerstown, 11-0.

on Friday.

Brown doubled and singled twice, scoring three runs. Villa doubled and singled twice, driving in a run and also scoring one.

Kannapolis got on the board first in the third inning when Blackman hit a two-run single.

The Intimidators later added three runs in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings to finish off the shutout.

Kannapolis starter Blake Battenfield (2-1) picked up the win after allowing just three hits over five scoreless innings. Opposing starter Nick Raquet (2-3) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after a rough outing in whic
