DAVIDSON — On April 20, the Child Development Center at Davidson County Community College raised $2,780.35 for the St. Jude Trike-a-Thon.

CDC parents and teachers watched and cheered as 45 child care and preschool students circled a track on the sidewalk of the playground. Though there was occasional congestion at turns, students navigated the course while enjoying support from the audience.

“We had a center-wide goal of promoting diversity and community involvement,” CDC program director Whitney Parker said. “Kids relate to other kids easier. St. Jude does a lot of incredible work, and we want to show our kids they have the power to help where they can.”

The fundraiser exceeded the goal of $1,000. Donations were collected through sponsors of individual Trike-a-Thon participants as well as anonymous online donations from campus. The anonymous donations allowed participants who may not have been able to raise money to participate and win prizes.

The St. Jude Trike-a-Thon is a national service project and fundraiser that teaches child care and preschool students trike and riding toy safety while raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Proceeds benefit research and treatment for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

One trike rider, 5-year-old Juliete Sapp, explained her reason for riding.

“Kids in the hospital are sick, and we’re raising money for them not to be sick,” Juliete said.
