The Rowan County Chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina will host a session on Summer Strategies for families and support persons dealing with autism at its May meeting.

Scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 15, the meeting will be held in Room 123 of the First Ministry Center, 220 N. Fulton St. The First Ministry Center is directly across the street from First Baptist Church. Visitors should park in the main parking lot, enter through the main doors, and walk straight ahead. Room 123 will be on the right.

Nancy Nestor from the Autism Society of North Carolina will speak and answer questions at the meeting. Childcare is provided, but those desiring childcare must RSVP by Friday, May 11, at RowanChapter@autismsociety-nc.org. The event is free and open to the public.

“As we know, children and young adults on the spectrum strive for structure. Summer can be a time where that schedule is routinely disrupted or parents and caregivers have no idea what to do during periods of downtime,” said Alice Lawson, president of the Rowan County Chapter.

“Nancy Nestor with the Autism Society of North Carolina will teach us some strategies that we can use to keep our children and young adults on track and engaged during summer break. We will also provide some resources on activities available during the summer.”

The Rowan County Chapter meets the third Tuesday of every month. The chapter was formed by local parents and care providers who have life experiences with autism. It is supported by the Autism Society of North Carolina, which has as its mission “to provide support and promote opportunities than enhance the lives of individuals within the autism spectrum and their families.”
