Area Sports Briefs: Raiders top Salisbury in CCC finale

LANDIS — South Rowan got a fine pitching performance from Matthew Donahue and beat Salisbury, 8-3, on Monday in a Central Carolina Conference baseball contest.
Donahue struck out six, walked one and limited Salisbury to six hits.
South Rowan (10-13, 8-10) took charge with a four-run first inning and led all the way.
Andrew Jones had two hits and scored two runs for South. Donahue and Jarrid Nelson drove in two runs each. Sammy Kincaid had two hits.
For the Hornets (14-9, 11-7), Chandler Lippard and Jack Fisher had two hits each.
Fourth-seeded Salisbury plays North Davidson at Finch Field today at 4:30 p.m. in a semifinal game in the CCC tournament.

ROBBINS — North Rowan lost at North Moore, 10-9, in the first round of the Yadkin Valley Conference Tournament on Monday.
The fifth-seeded Cavaliers (9-13) got good pitching from Jordan Goodine, who allowed four earned runs. Brett Tucker had a double and a triple. Kobe Dupree had two hits.

STATESVILLE — West Rowan was surprised by Statesville, 6-4, in North Piedmont Conference action on Monday.
Statesville broke a 4-all tie with two runs in the fifth. The Greyhounds won their first league game of the season. DaQuan Shepherd drove in three runs.
West (12-11, 6-4) was held to five hits. Mo Salazar drove in two runs. Salazar, Daniel Durham and Logan Sproul had doubles.
West still finished third in the NPC and will take on East Rowan in a tournament semifinal on Wednesday at Carson.
Local golf
Kris Bowen made a hole-in-one at The Revival at the Crescent on Sunday.
He used a 7-iron on the No. 5 hole.

With the onset of terrific weather, the McCanless Couples were delighted to be on the course, playing golf and soaking up sunshine.
The team of Mary Seaford, Jim and Susan Wydner took first place. Gene Seaford, Azalee and David Huneycutt placed second. Jim Wydner was closest to the pin and Susan Wydner made the longest putt.

In the 18-hole McCanless Couples Spring Kick off Tournament, Terrol Kendall, Harry Owens and Mark Napier took first place.
Ricky Honeycutt and Walt Kincaid placed second. Mary and Gene Seaford took third place
Ralph Carver was closest to the pin on No. 12, Walt Kincaid had longest putt on No. 17 and Ricky Honeycutt had longest putt on No. 8.
College golf
Livingstone will play in the regional on May 7-9 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.V.

George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 73-77-79 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The senior finished his career as GMU’s all-time leader in 10 categories.
College hoops
Pfeiffer announced that associate head coach Pete Schoch has been promoted to head coach of Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball program.
Schoch was hired to the Pfeiffer staff by former head coach Jeremy Currier in 2013.
Minor leagues
Colton Laws (Carson) made his season debut on Sunday for the Lansing Lugnuts in the Class A Midwest League.
Laws, 22, took a loss. He pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs. He struck out five and walked one.

Craig Brooks (Catawba) has been strong in his last four relief outings for the Double-A Tennessee Smokies. Brooks has pitched six scoreless innings with six strikeouts.

Jerry Sands (Catawba) smacked a three-run homer for Richmond on Friday, his third of the season.
NCHSAA
Former Catawba star Angela Harbour Mayfield has been named the Doris Howard Female Coach of the Year for N.C. girls basketball. She coached Mount Airy to its second straight 1A title this season.
Prep soccer
Madison Henry scored with three minutes left in the second overtime period and lifted South Rowan to a 1-0 Central Carolina Conference win against Central Davidson on Monday.
Henry is the state’s leading scorer.
Rhiannon Kimmer had the assist for South (15-5, 13-3), while Michelle Rivera made several big saves in the overtime period.

Carson rolled against West Rowan, 7-0, in North Piedmont Conference soccer on Monday.
Gracie Thomason scored three goals for the Cougars (11-5, 6-2). Carson also got goals from Sarah Musselwhite, Taylor Conrad and Estefani Perez.
The Cougars play at Statesville tonight.

Goalkeeper Lauren Weisensel returned to action on Monday, but East Rowan lost to Statesville, 1-0, in NPC action. Weisensel made eight saves.

Salisbury marched into the Rowan County record books on Monday, notching its twentieth win of the season to improve to 20-0 and 17-0 in the Central Carolina Conference.
The Hornets beat North Davidson, 4-0. The only other Rowan girls soccer team to win 20 was coach Nick Brown’s 2012 West Rowa team that was 20-4-1.
CCC champ Salisbury got two goals from Piper Muire and one each from Anna Grace Woolly and Freya Obermueller. Assists were tallied by Lillie Rusher (two), Obermueller and Elle Kennedy.
Salisbury plays at South Rowan on Wednesday.
It will be Senior Night for the Raiders, who will be playing for second place in the league. A loss would probably drop South to the No. 3 spot behind Salisbury and West Davidson.
Salisbury will be playing for the top overall seed in the 2A West bracket.
Prep softball
West Rowan crushed Statesville on Monday, 21-0, in North Piedmont Conference softball and tied Carson for first place.
The Falcons (16-5, 8-2) got homers from Mary Sobataka and Taylor Walton.
Walton drove in five runs, while Parker Greene and Alexandra Linder knocked in four each.
Hannah Roberts and Walton combined on a three-inning no-hitter.
The NPC semifinals are at Carson on Wednesday.
Carson will play South Iredell at 5 p.m., while West tangles with East Rowan at 7 p.m.

Davie County got three hits each from Anna Devereaux, Sierra Ferguson and Shea Woody and beat East Forsyth, 12-8, on Monday.
Davie clinched a share of the Central Piedmont Conference championship. and can still win the league outright.
