SALISBURY — Catawba College President Brien Lewis has appointed Jared Tice as dean of students, effective June 1.

Tice’s appointment concludes a national search to fill the cabinet-level role.

Tice has served at Barton College in Wilson since 2011. He was director of new student programs, student activities, Greek life and intramural sports, a position he held from 2011 to 2014.

In 2014, he was promoted to dean of students. His responsibilities expanded to include serving as senior judicial officer and chief student advocate, while also supervising the offices of student activities, Greek life, intramural sports, new student programs, and parent and family relations.

Tice also taught first-year seminar and sports management courses from 2013 to 2018.

“We are delighted that Jared has accepted our offer to join Catawba,” said Lewis. “It was clear as interviews for this position began that he lived out his personal commitment to the success of and advocacy for students at his current campus. He seemed to forge strong connections almost immediately with those he encountered during his campus visit, impressing all of us with his insights, level of commitment, and deep understanding of the distinct challenges facing student affairs professionals.

“We found him attuned to the needs and desires of today’s college students and very aware and in lockstep with current trends in higher education, especially at small campuses like Catawba’s,” Lewis said.

Tice served as student activities program coordinator at West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling, West Virginia, from 2010 to 2011. He coordinated social, recreational and intramural programs for the college’s 3,200 students on three campuses.

His other experience includes serving in 2009 as special events, service learning and volunteer coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club of Pleasants County in St. Marys, West Virginia, and in 2008, as a graduate assistant in the College of Education and Human Services at West Virginia University in Morgantown.

Tice has been a frequent presenter at professional conferences, most notably at the Southern Regional meetings of the National Orientation Directors Association. He wrote two successful grant applications, one for $15,000 and one for $14,660, while employed by Boys and Girls Club.

He was honored at Barton College in 2016 with the Spirit of Barton Award, the highest staff award made at that college, as the staff member who had made a significant difference in the lives of students and personified that institution’s core commitments.

He holds professional memberships in the Association for Orientation, Retention and Transition in Higher Education; the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities; the Association of Student Unions International; American College Personnel Association; the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators; and the Association of College and University Housing Officers International.

Originally from St. Marys, West Virginia, Tice earned his bachelor of arts degree in political science with a minor in business administration at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, and his master of arts degree in education leadership with an emphasis in higher education administration from West Virginia University.

He is pursuing his doctorate in education in higher education leadership from Maryville University in Missouri, and anticipates completing it in August 2019.
