LANDIS — South Rowan held off West Rowan for a 6-5 non-conference baseball win on Thursday.

West out-hit the Raiders, 8-6, but South (9-11) used a three-run third inning to take a 4-3 lead and never relinquished it.

Eli Hiskey pitched the first four innings for the win. Kory Moss pitched the fifth and sixth innings, and Jarrid Nelson worked the seventh for a save.

Starter Cullen Davis took the loss for the Falcons (11-9).

Mykal Berger and Mo Salazar had two hits each for West.  Berger had a triple, while Olen Stamper  and Salazar had doubles.

Garrett Harrington hit an early solo homer for South. Bryson Bebber and Nelson had RBIs. Zach Powers had two hits. Powers and Nelson had doubles.

West got the leadoff man on in the seventh inning, but Nelson picked off the runner and then ended the game with two strikeouts.

Prep tennis

STATESVILLE — Carson tennis ended the regular season with a 6-3 win against Statesville in North Piedmont Conference action  on Thursday.

Carson (9-5, 7-3) finished second in the league.

Winning in singles for the Cougars were Luke Sides, Hunter Smith, Jacob Horner and Dylan Owens.

Sides/Smith and Horner/Cameron Dunn won in doubles.

Sides is 10-4 at No. 1 singles, while Smith is 9-3 at No. 2.  They are 9-2 as a No. 1 doubles team.

South Iredell finished a perfect run through the NPC with an 8-1 win against East Rowan (5-5 NPC) on Thursday.

Landon Shuping won at No. 5 singles for the Mustangs.

Prep track

THOMASVILLE — In a four-team track meet involving Central Carolina Conference teams, South Rowan’s boys finished third behind Thomasville and West Davidson.

South’s girls topped Thomasville and Lexington and finished second behind West Davidson.

South’s boys got wins from Scott Stephens in the 200 and Noah Julian in the 3200. South also won the 4×800 relay.

Madison Lowery won three events for the South girls, taking the 800, 1600 and 3200. Jahleah Butler won the discus and shot put.  Peyton Sherrill won the triple jump.

Mid. school soccer

Erwin’s girls soccer team defeated North Rowan, 9-0.

Mckenzie Misenheimer and Riley Isley led the Eagles with three goals each.  Alix Vazquez, Lindsey Cook and Hannah Isley each tallied one goa.

Leah Hinceman had four assists and Riley Isley and Misenheimer had an assist each.

Mary Spry and Riley Isley combined for the shutout in goal.

Erwin’s  boys soccer team held on to defeat North Rowa,n 2-1.

Goals were scored by Carter Honeycutt and Andrew Martin.  Elijah Luna had the only assist.

Gavin Gullett recorded seven saves in goal.

North Rowan defensive lineman Joshua Mason signed with Trinity International on Thursday.

College  tennis

  Catawba’s Erisa Onchi and Sophie Hirsch have been named honorable mention All-South Atlantic Conference for women’s tennis.

Catawba junior Luca Picci was named to the 2018 All-South Atlantic Conference men’s tennis second team as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

College track

CHARLOTTE — Catawba began the two-day South Atlantic Conference Track and Field Championships on Thursday at the Belk Track on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. The Catawba Indians are sixth in the women’s standings with six points, while the men are eighth with 6.5 points. The Championships will conclude on Friday.

College baseball

Catawba starts a series at Wingate tonight at 6 p.m. that will decide the SAC regular-season championship.

Catawba holds a one-game lead over the Bulldogs entering the three-game series.

Montreat’s Ross Hoffner (Davie County) went 4-for-6  with four RBIs, two steals  and three runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of Johnson University.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS­ —  Laz Rivera had three hits and three RBIs, as the Kannapolis Intimidators exploded for a season-high in runs in an 8-3 win over the Greenville Drive on Thursday.

Down 3-0, the Intimidators took the lead for good with five runs in the first inning. Craig Dedelow hit a two-run single and then scored on a two-run double by Rivera en route to the two-run lead.

Kannapolis starter John Parke (2-0) picked up the win despite allowing three runs and seven hits over five innings.
