Love Your Teacher

Love Your Teacher is a Rowan Partners for Education event that aims to honor local teachers. Two teachers from each school were chosen based on video submissions from students. The event will have an Academy Awards Theme and is sponsored by Novant and F&M Bank.

It will be held at the West End Plaza on Thursday, May 10 from 6 to 8 pm, and will be catered by Chef Santos. The event falls during National Teacher Appreciation Week. Tickets are available for $50 each from the Rowan Chamber of Commerce with attention to Tracy Walser, twalser@RowanChamber.com.

North Rowan student showcase

North Rowan schools will host a  Community Schools Showcase Event on Thursday, April 26 at the North Carolina Transportation Museum from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The exhibition will showcase interactive and engaging presentations created by students in kindergarten through high school on real-world topics. Theater and arts students will be performing as well.

The event will also feature trolley rides.

All County Chorus

This year’s All County Chorus performance will be held Friday in the East Rowan High School auditorium.

Approximately 115 high school students auditioned in February at West Rowan High School for this year’s All County Chorus. Eighty-five were selected to represent North, Carson, South, West and East Rowan high schools. Those eighty-five students came together on April 12 at East to begin preparations for this years concert. That concert will also include the middle school all county chorus.

The performance begins at 6:30 p.m., and doors will open at 6:10 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

Rowan-Salisbury School System to host job fair

 The Rowan-Salisbury School System is looking to the local area to recruit top talent for its schools.

The district will be hosting a job fair next Saturday, April 28, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Wallace Educational Forum. Candidates will have an opportunity to meet principals and other leaders from the district’s 35 schools, as well as other departments within the school system that are hiring.

As the school year nears its end, district leaders hope to get a head start filling vacancies for the 2018-19 school year, including teachers, bus drivers, school nutrition workers, teacher assistants, and more.

RCCC to host job fair

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is excited to host a free informational job fair on Saturday, April 21, 2018, from 9 a.m. – noon. The “No Plan? No Problem! Job Fair” is a unique event open to the entire community.

With nearly 50 employers committed to attending, this is a great opportunity to explore a variety of career options after graduation, including transfer and technical pathway options available at Rowan-Cabarrus.

The event will be held at Rowan-Cabarrus’s South Campus, 1531 Trinity Church Rd., Concord. The job fair is in partnership with S&D Coffee & Tea and DecisionPath.

Davidson County Local Food Network and DCCC launches local food awareness campaign 

Davidson County’s Local Food Network (DCLFN) and the Davidson County Community College small business center has teamed up to host “Food Buzz.”

The event will be held April 26 at the Mary E. Rittling Center on Davidson County Community College’s campus from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Food Buzz will be a series of fun, diverse casual events to celebrate local food from farms and creative culinary guests and to introduce DCLFN’s efforts to improve awareness of local food, access to healthy food and facilitating strategies that benefit the county and the region.

The first Food Buzz features guest speaker Dennis Quaintance of Proximity and O’Henry Hotels. From assistant housekeeper to CEO of his own restaurant and hotel company, Quaintance is a pioneer in the industry with regards to his environmentally-conscious standards in hotel construction, his emphasis on local food in his restaurants and more recently, facilitating social equity through the ownership structure of Proximity Hotel, which is now 100 percent employee-owned.

As part of DCLFN’s local food awareness efforts, Food Buzz will feature a sampling menu of local foods.

DCCC hosts Farm-to-Table cooking class

New Orleans Chef Irvin J. Williams Jr. will bring educational and entertaining cooking classes to Davidson County this spring and summer. Through a partnership with Davidson County Community College, the former Thomasville resident will feature Farm to Table Cooking Classes on April 28May 18 and June 2.

DCCC’s Farm to Table Cooking Classes featuring Chef Williams’ delicious recipes are available for registration online atwww.davidsonccc.edu. The cost (including ingredients) is $18 per course. The April 28, 2018 course will feature Asian cuisine and take place from 12 p.m. t0 1 p.m. Participants must register and pay by no later than April 20.  The May 18, 2018 course will feature Indian cuisine and take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants must register and pay by no later than May 11. The third course in this series will feature a vegetarian meal and take place on June 2 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Participants must register and pay by no later than May 11.

DCCC to host information session

Davidson County Community College will hold “Career in a Year” on the Davidson Campus on April 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is an information-gathering opportunity for anyone interested in learning how to obtain a meaningful and accelerated education that could lead to career growth in one year or less. Program offerings showcased at “Career in a Year” cover over 20 different focus areas, including healthcare, advanced manufacturing, early childhood education, welding, software and web development, cyber security, masonry, forklift, automotive systems, truck driving, emergency medical technician (EMT), and more. Programs are all able to be completed within one year, and some have terms as brief as six months or less.

The event will be held in the Mary E. Rittling Conference center on the Davidson Campus. Staff will be available to discuss the costs involved with pursuing various programs as well as options on how to pay through financial aid, scholarships, and apprenticeship opportunities.  Career Services will be available to assist individuals with assessing options for making a career choice and associated labor market information.

On-site registration for classes will be available for those interested in getting started.
