Area Sports Briefs: South strong in CCC golf tourney

CHINA GROVE — South Rowan shot 327 and easily won Tuesday’s Central Carolina Conference Tournament at Warrior.

Medalist Andrew Coward shot 73   to pace the Raiders. Andrew Jackson shot 77. Brett Amburn shot 85, and Braylan Berrier shot 92.

Coward finished second in the season scoring to Ledford’s Tyler Partee, who shot 74 on Tuesday. Jackson placed 10th overall.

Alex Antosek (79), Hank Robins (87) and Will Fowler (90) led Salisbury. Antosek finish third in the season standings, with Fowler seventh and Robins eighth.

Ledford still won the season competition.

Prep tennis

CHINA GROVE — Luke Sides, Hunter Smith and Jacob Horner won in singles for Carson and Sides/Smith and  Avery Paschal/Ethen Fesperman prevailed in doubles in a 5-4 win  against East Rowan on Tuesday.

The win put Carson alone in second place in the  North Piedmont Conference and gave the Cougars a season sweep of East Rowan.

East had a 4-3 lead, but Carson the final two doubles matches that were decided.

It came down to a tiebreaker win by Fesperman/Paschal at No. 3 doubles.  They were down 3-0 early in the match.

It was a big day for Fesperman on his 16th birthday.

South Iredell stayed unbeaten in the NPC with a 7-2 win against West Rowan on Tuesday.

A.L. Brown’s Josh Parks blazed to a school-record 21.2 clocking in the 200 in a meet at Hopewell on Tuesday.

Prep softball

TROUTMAN — Freshman Taylor Walton’s first-inning grand slam keyed West Rowan’s 6-4 North Piedmont Conference win at South Iredell on Tuesday.

The homer was Walton’s  fifth of the season and helped the Falcons stay in first place.

Alexandra Linder had two hits and two RBIs for the Falcons. Morgan Corriher, Hannah Roberts and Camryn Nooner had two hits each.

Walton was the winning pitcher, with Hannah Roberts getting a save.

Holly Deal had three hits for the Vikings. Abbey Goodrum homered.

West Rowan (13-4, 6-1) hosts Concord today and takes on North Iredell in Mount Ulla on Friday.

CHINA GROVE — Carson pounded out 18 hits in a 13-2 NPC win over East Rowan on Tuesday.

Katie Jewell had two hits and four RBIs for the Cougars. Winning pitcher Rylie Stewart had two hits and two RBIs. She struck out six.

Also getting two hits for the Cougars (10-6, 5-2)  were Sierra Ratliff, Kary Hales, Kaityn Honeycutt and Skyler Smith. Jewell and Ashlyn Ellenburg had triples.

Maddie Trexler and Ashlyn Fritz had  RBIs for East (10-9, 3-4).

Carson hosts South Rowan this afternoon.  East Rowan is home against Central Cabarrus.

South Rowan will honor veterans with free admission at Thursday’s 6 p.m. home game against Lexington.

Salisbury lost to Ledford, 18-0, in a Central Carolina Conference game on Tuesday.

Sierra Ferguson, Sydney Wyatt  and Bridgett Tierney swung hot bats as Davie County beat West Forsyth, 5-3, for a Central Piedmont Conference win on Tuesday.

Prep baseball

TROUTMAN — West Rowan rallied for a 9-3 win at South Iredell on Tuesday.

The Falcons trailed 3-1 after five innings, but  they put together a five-run sixth to turn the game around. Jake Perez had the hit that broke a 3-all tie.

Cameron Graham led West offensively, with two hits and two walks.

Daniel Durham got the win with five innings of work and got relief help from Payne Stolsworth.

JT Fecteau and Stolsworth also had RBIs for the Falcons.

West (11-8, 5-2) survived five errors. South Iredell made four.

West is tied with East for second place in the NPC, just a game behind Carson.

South Rowan pushed back Tuesday’s game with Central Davidson to today and will now play West Rowan on Thursday.

WELCOME —  Salisbury jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hold off North Davidson in a Central Carolina Conference game on Tuesday.

The Black Knights won, 7-3.

Joe Steinman drove in two runs in the first inning for the Hornets.

Salisbury had eight hits, with Griffin Myers, Chandler Lippard and Steinman getting two each.

Jack Fisher struck out nine in five innings but took the loss.

Merritt Beeker was the winning pitcher. Jake Brown drove in two for the  Black Knights. Mason Everhart homered.

DENTON — North Rowan won at South Davidson, 5-2, on Tuesday in YVC action. McGwire Smith and Bryan Lawson pitched well for the Cavaliers (6-12, 6-8).

Will Anthony went 3-for-3 with a double and drove in a run.

Davie  County (9-6, 4-3) lost at East Forsyth, 4-3, on Tuesday on a walk-off homer.

Hite Merrifield, Carson Whisenhunt and Cody Smith had two hits each for the War Eagles. Whisenhunt pitched into the sixth inning.

Max Agnew pitched six strong innings and Luke Nelson had three hits as Robinson topped Concord, 6-3, in South Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.

Cox Mill shelled A.L. Brown, 15-4, in SPC play on Tuesday. Matt Alderfer and Chandler Riley had four hits each for the Chargers, while Tanner Covington had four RBIs.

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost at Augusta, 6-5, on Tuesday despite a grand slam by Luis Gonzalez.

Justin Yurchak and Laz Rivera had two hits each.

College baseball

SALISBURY — Catawba hurlers allowed five homers and nine runs in the first two innings, but the Indians rallied for a 16-10 non-conference win against Barton on Tuesday at Newman Park.

Caleb Link got things settled down on the mound for Catawba and pitched three innings. Riley Myers was sharp for two innings. Greg Brown got the win.

Luke Setzer had a bases-loaded double to key Catawba’s comeback. Chance Bowden homered twice and drove in four runs.

Wingate outfielder Trent Wynn  and Wingate pitcher Hunter Morgan are the SAC honorees for this week. Catawba (25-20) plays at Wingate on Friday.

Prep soccer

After a scoreless battle, Statesville won against West Rowan on PKs on Monday in North Piedmont Conference action.

South Iredell won against Carson, 4-1, on Monday in a battle of the top two teams in the NPC.  Hannah Smith scored for the Cougars (9-3, 4-1). Sarah Musselwhite assisted.

College golf

  Catawba took ninth place at the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Championships, an even that concluded on Tuesday at Woodcreek.

Wingate cruised to the win, shooting the lowest score each round.

Kaley Barts had the best finish for Catawba. Her three-day total of 245 total put her in 23rd.

Jaime Cassell rebounded from an opening-round 90 to finish 36th, shooting a 79 in Tuesday’s final round.

College softball

HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Catawba dropped a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Coker on Tuesday.

The Indians  lost the first game, 3-2, in eight innings.

Leah Huggins and Sierrah McCarthy had two hits each. Huggins and Taylor Martin had RBIs.

Brooke Walser took the loss.

In the second game, Kaylee Cook had two hits and drove in the run for the Indians (19-24, 7-11). Madison Hunter took the loss.

Local golf

Thirty-nine GARS members played at Warrior.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Mick Rowell with a net of 65.10.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Ernest Wagner with a net of 64.05. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Bobby Wagoner with a net of 67.09. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Bert Bollinger with a net of 64.33.

Low gross was a 76 shot by Rowell, while low net was shot by Wagner.

O.J. Chandler, 88, shot 85.

The Erwin girls soccer team defeated China Grove,  9-0.

Hannah Isley and Mckenzie Misenheimer scored two goals each.  Mary Spry, Riley Isley, and Alix Vazquez added a goal each, while Callie Trexler and Ashlee Chipman each scored their first middle school goal.

Hannah Isley had two assists and Trexler, Vazquez, Lindsey Cook, Leah Hinceman, and Morrigan Wilhelm added an assist each.   Spry and Misenheimer combined for the shutout in goal.
