SALISBURY — The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will hold a called meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Board members will hash out several topics that came up during a recent all-day retreat in preparation for budget season.

At the March 29 retreat, school administrators made several proposals, including updating and expanding the district’s restorative classroom program. They also proposed an expansion of the early college program, either by increasing students per grade or by adding a campus.

But of chief concern on the budget is a proposal to eliminate some staff positions through attrition. The proposal calls for ensuring that each school has the proper number of staff members to meet students’ needs. Depending on the size of the student body and other factors, some schools may not need every support staff member it has while others may need more.

According to the proposal, the district would have a goal of cutting 10 support positions — such as technology facilitator or media center coordinator — through attrition, repurposing or transferring to other schools by July 1. Another 10 positions would be freed by December.

By doing so, the district could save as much as $1.5 million, which could go to fund needed programs such as school resource officers in elementary schools, fully funding the early college or funding transportation to Knox Center for Accelerated Studies.

The board also will consider budget requests for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

The board will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Wallace Educational Forum board room, 500 N. Main St.
