Area Sports Briefs: Steinman pitches Hornets to win vs. West Rowan

MOUNT ULLA — Salisbury’s baseball team got a complete-game pitching performance from Joe Steinman and beat West Rowan, 3-1, on Monday in a non-conference game.

Steinman allowed only two hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Salisbury had eight hits, with Vance Honeycutt, Griffin Myers and Jack Fisher getting two each.

Salisbury scored two runs in the first. Honeycutt and Fisher had singles, with a key error and a run-scoring wild pitch mixed in.

Logan Sproul’s RBI groundout for West made it 2-1 in the third inning.

The Hornets (12-5) scored an insurance run in the sixth on hits by  Myers and Chandler Lippard.

Steinman issued a two-out walk to Jake Perez in the seventh, but Zeb Burns lined out to Myers at shortstop to end the game.

Daniel Durham pitched a complete game for the Falcons (8-8). He allowed one earned run. He struck out six and walked none.

• Salisbury also won the jayvee game with West, 8-7.

Prep girls soccer

WALLBURG — South Rowan’s girls won at Ledford, 5-2, for another Central Carolina Conference victory.

Madison Henry had three goals and an assist. Taylor Mauldin had a goal and an assist, as did Rhiannon Kimmer.

Katelyn Goodman had an assist for the Raiders (9-3, 8-2 CCC).

South’s only league losses are to Salisbury and West Davidson.

Carson swept a jayvee/varsity doubleheader against A.L. Brown on Monday.

The Cougars won the varsity game, 1-0.

In the jayvee game, Sydney Borst and Ariel Vargas had two goals each in a 5-0 Carson win over the Wonders. Isabel Elizade had one goal.

Prep boys golf

THOMASVILLE — South Rowan won a Central Conference golf match at Winding Creek on Monday.

The Raiders shot 167 to edge Oak Grove and Ledford by one shot.

Andrew Coward shot 36 to lead South. Andrew Jackson shot 38.  Brylan Barrier shot 45, and Brett Amburn carded a 48.

Leading Salisbury with 40s were Alex Antosek and  Will Fowler. Hank Robins shot 43.

Oak Grove’s Grady Newton was medalist with a 35.

STATESVILLE —  In   North Piedmont Conference golf at Statesville Country Club, East Rowan shot 151 and edged South Iredell by three strokes.

East’s Bryson Sprinkle shot 35 for medalist honors. Alex Miller shot 36, while Austin Miller and William Garland shot 40s.

Zain Tucker (40) and Ethan Scarborough (42) led Carson.

NickKluttz shot 45 to lead West Rowan.

South Iredell’s Stone Dyson shot 36.

Prep boys tennis

North Rowan took a 5-4 win against West Montgomery in Yadkin Valley Conference action on Monday.

Hans Roemer, Garrett Jennings, JD Hager and Ray Montes won singles matches for the Cavaliers.

Roemer/Jared Hensley won a key doubles match.

Salisbury stayed undefeated, posting an easy 9-0 Central Carolina Conference win against Oak Grove on Monday.

Roarke Burton, Ethan McGee, Jander Rodas-Palacios, Adam Drye, Sean Archer and Juan Salazar won in singles.

Drye/Burton, McGee/Archer and Rodas-Palacios/Salazar won in doubles.

Prep softball

SALISBURY — Ellen Yang pitched a three-inning no-hitter and struck out nine as Salisbury beat Lexington, 15-0, on Monday in Central Carolina Conference action.

Yang had two hits.

Kayla Caldwell and Lauryn Alexander had doubles.

WELCOME — Undefeated North Davidson overwhelmed South Rowan, 14-0, in CCC action on Monday.

Regan Spencer pitched a one-hitter for the Black Knights. She also homered and drove in four runs.

Morgan Brown pitched for South.

Summer McKeon had the only hit for the Raiders.

Local golf

Bud Howard, 87 years young, made a hole-in-one on Friday at McCanless.

Howard struck his perfect shot on No. 12. The 115-yard hole has a two-tiered green, and the pin was on the upper tier.

Howard has been playing golf for close to 50 years. This was his first ace. Jeff Howard and Mickey Landreth witnessed the feat.

With cooperative weather and pleasant temperatures, the McCanless Couples were able to reume friendly competition on Sunday.

Mary and Gene Seaford and Jim and Susan Wydner led the field.

Story, David Huneycutt,  Melinda Rigger and newcomers Debby and Dan Ingelston placed second.

Wydner had closest to the pin, while Mary Seaford had longest putt.

5k Run at Knox

Knox Middle School will host its 6th annual Rock Your Socks 5k and Fun Run on Sunday, April 15, at 2 p.m.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three overall males and females.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis Intimidators swept two from Lakewood on Sunday, 5-1, and 4-3.

On Monday, the Intimidators (3-2)  lost to Asheville, 7-6. in 10 innings.

Ramon Marcelino had four hits and four RBIs for the Tourists.

Craig Dedelow had three hits, including two doubles, for Kannapolis.

YMCA Nationals

On the fifth day of the YMCA Swimming Nationals, Salisbury senior Ethan Knorr took seventh place in the mile.

Salisbury freshman Emily Knorr placed 12th in the mile.

College golf

Catawba junior Trey Burton has been named a  South Atlantic Conference men’s golf honorable mention all-conference pick.

Burton has a stroke average of 72.95 and will be competing with the Indians today during the final 18 holes of the SAC Championships. Catawba is in ninth place entering today’s play.

   

College baseball

Catawba hosts always strong Mount Olive today at 4 p.m. at Newman Park.
