‘The Importance of the Brew’

Rowan History Club will meet Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Messinger Room of the Rowan Museum, situated in the Old Courthouse at 202 N. Main St.
“The Importance of the Brew” will be presented by New Sarum Brewing Company’s co-owner/brew master Andy Maben.
Rowan County and North Carolina has a long history brewing beer as an agricultural product and in-home brewing for home consumption. Maben will take us through this history and show how New Sarum Brewing Company fits into the larger narrative.
The 30-minute presentation is followed by a Q&A period. The Rowan History Club is open to anyone interested in the history of Rowan County. There are no dues or admission fees, and refreshments are served. The Messinger Room is on the second floor and accessed by elevator or stairs through the side back door of the museum.

30th annual Visually Impaired Minature Golf Tournament

The Rowan County Parks and Recreation Department’s Therapeutic Recreation Division will sponsor its 30th annual statewide Visually Impaired Minature Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 14 on the two ADA compliant miniature golf courses at Dan Nicholas Park. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. Each participant will shoot 36 holes of golf.
Approximately 80 golfers and 70 volunteers are expected from across North Carolina at this year’s tournament. Volunteers will work as sighted guides to assist the participants with lining up putts, describing the course and pointing out obstacles.
At the ceremony afterward, trophies will be awarded in each sight division: A-Legally Blind (has some sight-can make out images and light), and B-Totally Blind (no light perception or images).
The public is invited. Lunch will available for spectators, family and friends for $5 per person. For more information contact the Therapeutic Recreation Division at 704-216-7780.

Memorial birthday celebration for Curtis Dwayne Thompson

A community birthday event in memory of Curtis Dwayne Thompson will be held from11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. It will feature Gospel music from local groups, African dancers, Younique Stars Dancers, GiGi The Mime, a car show, the LC Gospel Choir, Virginia Rush and be emceed by Walter Brotherton.
A scholarship will be given in Dwayne’s name to a single parent with a son excelling in basketball. There will be a bouncy house and food. Bring a chair.
The Curtis Cares Foundation is a helping ministry that visits ICU units in hospitals with care packages such as water, snacks, chips, etc. for family members awaiting a word from the doctor or staying by their loved one’s side. Snack donations and monetary donations are appreciated.
Held at Kelsey Scott Park, 1920 Old Wilkesboro Road.

SRCWU prayer breakfast

The Salisbury Rowan Church Women United Prayer Breakfast was at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church on March 3, attended by 120 women and men.
Participating were Rena Morgan, First Calvary Missionary Women president; Dorothy Gill-Smith, SRCWU president; Rev. Leamon Brown, host pastor; Brenda Loflin, First UMC; Delline Gudger; Dottie Clement of First Presbyterian; Phyllis Thomside, St. Luke Baptist; Sabra Mills, John Calvin Presbyterian; Manie Richardson, Milford Hills UMC; speaker Sue Moore, ordained elder of Unity Presbyterian; Twanda Mitchell, White Rock AME Zion; and Montrella Davis, Sacred Heart. The attendance banner was awarded to Trinity Presbyterian with 14 persons present.
A highlights of the morning was the presentation of the Valiant Woman Award. A Valiant Woman is a woman who lives the Gospel message in her everyday life. The award was presented to Jean Lowery of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist. Lowery has held leadership positions in CWU and currently serves as the chair of the state nominations committee. She is a retired educator and has been director of the Westside Community Foundation After School Program and also of the Stepping Up Summer Enrichment Program, both obased at Gethsemane.
Education of children is part of the national CWU priorities.

SRCWU annual meeting

The 2018 Annual Meeting of Salisbury-Rowan Unit of Church Women United was held on Feb. 2 at Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church.
Participating in the ceremonies were CWU president Dorothy Gill-Smith (Moore’s Chapel); newly appointed pastor Rev. Robert Kelley; Chi Chi Leazer, Women’s Home Missions president; and Anita Hovis, representative to CWU.
Moore’s Chapel Angels performed a liturgical dance and the keynote speaker was Rev. Dr. Barbara Hart, associate pastor of First Calvary Baptist.
Participating in the business meeting were president Gill-Smith; treasurer Tonya Cornelius Johnson; Brenda Venning (bylaws committee); Doris Brown (nominations committee); and Jean Lowery (state nominations chair).
