Letter: Avoid companies that use slave labor conditions

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, March 20, 2018

Slavery has existed since almost the beginning of mankind, and it still exists today. Modern businesses like Apple and Nike use virtual slave labor in countries like China and Vietnam.

So how can Rowan County limit modern slavery? The local government of Rowan County can encourage local businesses to sell products made from countries heavily enforcing the outlaw of slavery, like the United States, by giving them tax breaks, which will be a more ethical way to earn a profit.

Businesses and governments can track which country products come from through the UPC code or from fairtradecertified.org.

Slavery is still a problem today, and it can’t be stopped if nobody does anything about it.
