Area Sports Briefs: Catawba softball splits

HARROGATE, Tenn. — Catawba softball split a doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial on Sunday as South Atlantic Conference play finally got under way for the Indians. Catawba won 10-6 before losing 8-7 in eight innings.

Catawba was two outs away from a sweep, but Kelsie Hocutt salvaged a split for the Railsplitters with a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap.

Catawba scored eight runs in the first inning in the opener, and held  on from there.

Catawba got 15 hits, with Leah Huggings getting four and Kaylee Cook (A.L. Brown) and Allie Baker (A.L. Brown) getting three each. Cook and Delane Smith drove in two runs apiece.

Preston Ellenberg and Brooke Walser split pitching duties for the Indians, with Walser relieving in the fourth.

• Catawba got off to another fast start in the second game and led 5-0 going to the bottom of the third. That’s when Lincoln Memorial started a comeback.

It was 6-all at the end of regulation.

Taylor Martin (West Rowan) had a sac fly to put Catawba ahead 7-6 in the top of the eighth, but the Indians left the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the eighth, after a runner was placed at second base to start the inning, Catawba (13-14, 1-1) got the first out on a groundball  before Hocutt homered to center field off Walser.

Martin had a double and a triple for the Indians. Huggins had three hits, and Cook had two more hits. Smith homered in the first inning.

College baseball

Mars Hill’s Matt Honeycutt (South Rowan) went 5-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs in an 11-6 win  against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.

College track

UNC Pembroke’s Matthew Martin (Carson)  crushed his personal-best time by nearly 29 seconds on the way to a fifth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run on Friday in the  Braves Classic.

Martin  ran 15:13 and led the Braves. His twin brother, Jonathan, ran 15:31.He finished 15th.

Charlotte’s Zachary Marchinko (Carson) placed second in the 3K at the 49er Classic on Saturday.

His time ranked fifth-all-time at Charlotte.

Marchinko also ran a PR in the 1500.

Prep track

In track at A.L. Brown, the Wonder boys won a meet against West Rowan and South Iredell.

Josh Parks won the 400, triple jump and high jump for the Wonders. Brandon Hernandez took the 1600 and 3200. Jalen Neal won the 200. Tanner Roth won the 800. Samuel Calleja won the discus. The Wonders also took the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. West Rowan winners were Jalen Houston in the 100; Devin Turner in the shot, and D.J. Robinson in the long jump.

In the girls meet scores were still being adjusted as of Sunday, but South Iredell will come out on top.

A.L. Brown’s Akeena Maxwell won the 100 and 200. Michelle Starr won the discus and shot. A.L. Brown’s girls also won the 4×100 and 4×200. Anna Cheek won the 3200. West winners were Deja Phillips in the 400 and Tempest Robbins in the 100 hurdles.

Prep golf

The Cannon School played won the Forsyth Country Day School Invitational golf tournament Friday at Tanglewood Champions course.

The tournament had 16 teams from around the state and 96 players. Cannon won the tournament by 18 shots.

Charlie Barr was the medalist with a 70 and Michael Childress finished 2nd with a 71.

Local golf

Savoring the spring in the air, the team of Melinda Rigger, Walt Kincaid, Ralph and Pam Carver jumped into first place, eclipsing the second-place team of Susan Houston, David Huneycutt and Azalee Story.

Melinda Rigger was closest to the pin.  Houston had longest putt.

College swimming

Catawba’s  Joao Barreto qualified for the B final of the 200 butterfly at the NCAA II Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. It was the final swim of the meet for Barreto.

Barreto swam the second and third fastest times in school history in the 200 fly in finishing 16th. He posted a 1:48.78 in the prelim to qualify and came back with a 1:49.20 in the final. The 16th-place finish earned Catawba a point at the Championships to put the Indians in 32nd place.

Barreto’s first event was the 100 butterfly on Thursday. He posted a prelim time of 48.29 which tied him for 16th place. He went into a swim-off for the final spot in the consolation final, but lost the swim by about three-quarters of second. Barreto’s time in the swim-off of 48.16 was the fifth fastest in school history.

The High School Softball Classic is set for April 5 and 6 at  Salisbury Community Park, Hurley School Road.

Two fields will be in use. The plan is for this to be an annual event.

Catawba track and  field

49er Classic

Catawba took a fifth place in the 4×800 relay. The team of Tom Joyce, AJ Meadows, Rontrel Felton and Ethan Bemis clocked in at 8:11.03. The top individual finish came from Michal Swepson, who was 25th in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:04.81. Also in the 3000 was Logan Bemis (9:26.29), Drew Lake (9:34.12) and Henry Brenner (9:51.42).

Abbie Adams was the top finisher for Catawba in the women’s 1500, posting a time of 4:55.79 to take 54th. She was followed by Patience Hunt (5:19.17), Jordan Hunt (5:49.09) and Lexie Petty (5:56.44). Ethan Bemis finished 74th in the men’s 1500 in a time of 4:07.21. Also in the race was Joyce (4:08.54) and Felton (4:21.53). Nikki Elminowski (19.13.62) was 55th in the women’s 5000 with Kyle Rhodes (15:41.43) claiming 64th in the men’s 5000. Curtis Carmack ran 15:45.12 in the 5000, while Lea Hartwig placed 70th in the women’s 800 in a time of 2:30.80.

FIELD EVENTS

For the men, Elyjah Thomas had a sixth-pace throw in the discus at 36.94m. He threw 29.92m in the javelin and was 12th, while his throw of 9.23m in the shot put was 13th. Alec Slusser had a 29.01m throw in the javelin. Jai Morrow was eighth in the long jump at 6.36m.

Samiyah Rasheed led the women throwers, finishing 12th in the javelin (19.52m) and 13th in the shot put (8.29m). Jhalisa Bell was 14th in the discus at 24.19m and had a throw of 19.19m in the javelin. Hiedi Mueller had a 7.98m throw in the shot put and a 22.58 throw in the discus.

SPRINTS

Taylor Marshall posted the top finish with a seventh-place in the women’s 400 meter hurdles. She posted a time of 1:14.85. Siearra Emmerson had a time of 1:19.56. Austin Snide placed 10th in the men’s 1500 meters (4:25.11) with Slusser taking 16th in the men’s 400 (58.12). Evan Wimbish went 17th in the men’s 100 (11.34) and 23rd in the 200 (23.35). Morrow had a time of 12.08 in the 100.

Catawba competes at the adidas Winthrop Invitational next Friday and Saturday.

Prep softball

Davie County played two games on Saturday.

In a 6-1 win against Ledford, Anna Devereaux had two hits and two RBIs and the War Eagles got strong pitching from Rachel Bostic.

In a 7-5 win loss to Alexander Central, Devereaux, Bridgett Tierney and Sierra Ferguson had two hits each. Ferguson drove in two runs.

Prep baseball

A.L. Brown (1-5)  got its first win on Saturday, beating North Iredell at Intimidators Stadium, 10-0.

Cord Butler pitched five shutout innings with five strikeouts, while Dylan Shubert sparked the offense.

Northwest Cabarrus (4-4) beat North Meck on Saturday at Intimidators Stadium, 8-0. Chris Monteleone tossed a shutout and struck out 11.

Cole Petcher and Blake Sinclair drove in three runs each, and Andrew Raffaldt had three hits.
