Area Sports Briefs: First losses for South soccer and West softball

CHINA GROVE — Hannah Smith scored four goals to lead Carson to a 6-2 win against South Rowan on Thursday in girls soccer.

It was the first loss for the Raiders (6-1).

Emelyn Sotelo and Lani Isley also scored for the Cougars (2-2).

Madison Henry scored both South Rowan goals.Rhiannon Kimmer had an assist. The score was 2-all at halftime.

Salisbury completed a 3-0 week with a 9-0 victory over West Rowan in non-conference action Thursday night at Ludwig Stadium.

Piper Muire had a hat trick. Julia Honeycutt, Freya Obermueller, Caroline Colwell (her first goal of the season), Elle Kennedy (her first career goal) and Theresa Holland (her first career goal) scored for the Hornets.

Assists were credited to Lillie Rusher (2),  Honeycutt, Obermueller, Lila Harry, and Clara Brown.

Emily Mann and Caroline Clark combined for the shutout in goal for Salisbury (7-0).

“Honeycutt played excellently,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “She scored early and then took a backseat as more inexperienced players took to the forefront. She picked up another assist to a player who had not yet scored tonight, providing opportunities for her teammates that would have otherwise gone unrealized.”

Salisbury plays at East Davidson on Monday.

Prep softball

KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown took advantage of eight West Rowan errors and beat the Falcons, 9-4, on Thursday in a non-conference game.

It was the first loss for the Falcons (5-1).

A.L. Brown (2-3) had lost earlier to South Rowan and East Rowan.

West scored three runs in the top of the first, but the  Wonders got two in the first and four in the second  to take charge.

A.L. Brown pitcher Tali Hagler put up zeroes in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth, as the Wonders took control. She pitched a complete game.

Taylor Walton had two triples for West. Mary Sobataka had two hits. Alexandra Linder scored two runs. Morgan Corriher drove in a run.

Kayleigh Skinner had three hits and two RBIs for the Wonders.  Madison Hamke had two hits. Brae Woods and Lauren Ritchie scored two runs each.

GRANITE QUARRY —East Rowan blasted North Rowan in a doubleheader on Thursday.

East took the first game, 10-0. Haley Strange pitched a no-hitter and struck out 13.  Mackenzie Sprinkle had two hits, including a homer. Maddie Trexler had three hits.   Caroline Johnson and Kaitlyn Samples had two hits.

• East romped in the second game, 19-1. Karley Teague was the winning pitcher.  Trexler had four hits. Johnson had three hits. Freshman Izzy Schroeder and Sprinkle had two hits each.

CONCORD — Carson lost at Central Cabarrus, 2-0, on Thursday.

Rylie Stewart threw a complete game for the Cougars (2-1). Haley Howerton had a triple for the Cougars.  Kary Hales, Kaitlyn Honeycutt and Liza Simmerson also had hits.

Prep baseball

MOUNT ULLA — Davie County scored 12 runs in the top of the sixth and pounded West Rowan, 21-4, on Thursday.

Davie’s Carson Whisenhunt drove in six runs. Hite Merrifield and Guy Brunelli knocked in three each. Landon Bandy went 3-for-3. Garrett Chandler, Cody Hendrix and Whisenhunt had triples.

Mykal Berger drove in two runs for West. Olen Stamper knocked in one. J.T. Fecteau had two of West’s five hits. Logan Sproul had a double.

West used six pitchers. Scout Nichols started and took the loss.

Davie (3-3) jumped on top, 3-0, in the top of the first. West had cut the deficit to 5-4 after three innings, but the Falcons didn’t score again. Bandy and Grayson Keaton pitched for Davie.

SALISBURY — Salisbury mauled Lexington, 25-1, for a Central Carolina Conference victory on Thursday.

Chandler Lippard went 4-for-4 with four RBIs for the Hornets. Griffin Myers had four hits and knocked in two. Joe Steinman had three hits and four RBIs. Bo Rusher went 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs. Will Taylor went 3-for-3 with four runs and three RBIs.

Rusher pitched two hitless innings and struck out five. David Holden pitched the next three innings and allowed one run.

Salisbury (6-1, 5-1 CCC) is home tonight against Central Davidson.

LANDIS — North Davidson’s Merritt Beeker pitched a five-inning no-hitter as the Black Knights beat South Rowan, 11-0, on Thursday.

Prep tennis

WELCOME — Salisbury’s boys tennis team is ranked No. 1 in 2A.

Salisbury won on Thursday against North Davidson, 6-0, in a Central Carolina Conference match.

Winning in singles for SHS (6-0) were Roarke Burton Parker Chmiel, Jander Rodas, Adam Drye, Sean Archer and Juan Salazar.

Salisbury will play South Rowan on Monday at 4:30 p.m.   

Prep track

TYRO — Salisbury’s boys won Thursday’s four-team track meet at West Davidson that also included  Oak Grove and Thomasville.

Salisbury won the 4×200 and 4×800 relays. Christian Morgan won both hurdling events. Other wins for the Hornets were posted by Tyrone Johnson (100), Keegan Dillon (800),  Jabril Norman (discus), Rondarius Peele (shot), Damonte Wyatt (long jump), Nick Austin (triple jump) and Kemuel Sloan (high jump).

• West Davidson rolled in the girls meet, with Salisbury taking second.

Leah Cressler won the 800 and 1600 for the Hornets. Lexie May won the discus, and NiTavia Corpening won the long jump.

Prep golf

In Wednesday’s Central Carolina Conference match at Meadowlands on Wednesday, Andrew Jackson shot 40 to lead South Rowan and Andrew Coward shot 42.

College golf

Cape Fear’s Parker Chavis (South Rowan) shot two 74s and tied for third in the Barton Invitational.
