Area sports briefs: Withers honored; lots of spring sports action

Salisbury’s Bryan Withers is the Central Carolina Conference Coach of the Year for boys basketball.

Withers led the Hornets to the CCC regular-season championship and to the regional final in the playoffs. Salisbury finished 27-4, the fourth-highest wins total in program history.

Salisbury’s Trell Baker, Oshaun Robinson and Bill Fisher made All-CCC.

South Rowan’s Bailey Graham made All-CCC.

Thomasville’s Cameron Whiteside is the CCC Player of the Year, with North Davidson’s Themus Fulks second in the voting.

In CCC girls baskeball, East Davidson’s Don Corry is the league coach of the year.

Ledford’s Lyric Thorne is the player of the year.

Salisbury’s Bryanna Troutman, Anayia Fulson and Maria Capito made All-CCC.

South Rowan’s Janiya Downs made All-CCC.

Salisbury’s Emily Knorr, Katie Knorr, Kathryn Morrison and Mary Kaufmann were all-conference in girls swimming

In boys swimming, Salisbury’s Roarke Burton, Ethan Knorr, Keegan Dillon, Roshen Amin and Joe Steinman were all-conference. Knorr was runner-up for swimmer of the year.

South Rowan’s Cameron Hurd, Noah Severt, Blaise Bumgarner and Christian Reynolds made all-conference.

Salisbury coaches Sallie Pittman and Ryan Starrett were runner-up for coach of the year.

South Rowan’s Logan Lambert, Muhammad Dolley and Michael Sloop made the All-CCC wrestling team, along with Salisbury’s Javon White, Lloyd Hilton, Timmy Boyd, Kevion Chunn and Michael Lowry.

  

Local golf

The team of Ken Clarke-Chris Owen shot 65-62 — 127 and won the Two-Man Mulligan Tournament at Warrior. Keith Dorsett-Ryan Honeycutt shot 129 for second.

Alex Lee-Alex Nianouris shot 130 for third place.

In McCanless Couples play on Sunday,   Terol Kendall, Ralph & Pam Carver and Calvin Smith trounced the field for a first-place finish.

Melinda Rigger, Mary Seaford and Susan & Jim Wydner took second place on a score card playoff.

Rigger was closest to the pin and Kendall won longest putt.

Prep football

Sam Greiner is  resigning at Harding to take the job as Hickory Ridge’s head football coach.

The Catawba graduate was the state’s coach of the year in 2017 after leading the Rams to a state title.

Prep baseball

SALISBURY — Jack Fisher had two doubles and drove in three runs to spark Salisbury to a 5-2 non-conference win against North Rowan on Monday at Robertson Stadium.

Salisbury out-hit the Cavaliers, 9-6, and took advantage of three errors.

Chandler Lippard had two hits and scored twice for the Hornets (3-0). Joe Steinman had two hits.

Bo Rusher drove in a run and was strong on the mound. He struck out eight in five innings. Steinman finished up.

For North (2-1), Jordan Goodine and Sydney Patton had RBIs. Jonathan Spry took the loss. Charlie Durham pitched well in relief.

Salisbury scored two runs in the second for a 2-0 lead and got two more in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.

CHINA GROVE — Carson was held to one hit and lost to visiting Myers Park, 6-1, on Monday.

Cameron Prugh had the only knock for the Cougars (1-3).

Carson starting pitcher Maddux Holshouser struck out 11 in six innings and left with the Cougars down, 2-1. He threw 84 pitches, 53 for strikes.

Jack Ahlum and Donnie Dockery knocked in two runs each for the Mustangs (2-0) to back strong pitching by Matt Hunter and Dane Skufca.

CONCORD — West Rowan led at Robinson, 4-3, after three innings, but things unraveled after that for the Falcons’ bullpen.

Robinson got five runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth to win 15-5 by the 10-run rule.

Mo Salazar knocked in two runs for the Falcons, while Mykal Berger drove in one. Salazar’s double was the only extra-base hit for West (1-1).

Noah Love drove in three runs for Robinson (1-0) and was the winning pitcher.

CONCORD — Avery Shull had a three-run inside-the park homer  as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning to put an exclamation on East Rowan’s 8-3 win at Cox Mill on Monday.

Shull circled the bases after an outfielder crashed into the fence.

Hayden Setzer had a conventional two-run shot  during East’s four-run second inning. Jax Fitz had two hits and sac fly for the Mustangs (1-1), and Charlie Klingler also had two hits.

Will Brown pitched three innings and left with a 5-1 lead. Jake Davis got the win. He took the Mustangs into the seventh inning.

TROUTMAN — Davie won at South Iredell, 4-2, on Monday.

Guy Brunelli went 2-for-2 with two walks. Landon Bandy had two hits.  He also pitched a complete game and struck out eight.

Prep golf

East Rowan’s boys finished second at the Irish Creek Invitational.

Prep swimming

Carson freshman Matthew Epley was All-North Piedmont Conference in swimming.

He was left off the list sent out by the league.

Epley was Rowan County and NPC champion in the 200 freestyle.

Prep soccer

Carson’s Lani Isley scored two goals in a 5-3  loss to Concord on Monday.

Sarah Musselwhite also scored a goal for the Cougars (0-2).

West Rowan’s Ryley Corriher made 15 saves in a 9-0 loss to Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.

Salisbury won against Lexington, 5-0, with Julia Honeycutt getting a hat trick.

Salisbury (2-2, 2-0 CCC) also got goals from Freya Obermueller and Caroline Cardelle. Lillie Rusher had two assists. Cardelle, Piper Muire and Anna Grace Woolly had one each.

“Despite the fact thatLexington played with nine girls behind the ball the vast majority of the night, we did a solid job of moving it around and attacking with width,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

The defense of Rusher, Elle Kennedy, Bethanie Stauffer, Olivia Dagenhart and GK Emily Mann held the Yellow Jackets to one shot on frame in the shutout.

Salisbury got outstanding play from Honeycutt, Kennedy, Muire and Dagenhart.

Next up for the Hornets is a 6 p.m. CCC matchup Wednesday night against Central Davidson.

Prep softball

CONCORD — Lauren Coughenour and Alexandra Linder drove in three runs each as West Rowan’s softball team won against Concord, 9-2, on Monday.

Coughenour went 3-for-3, while Linder had two hits. Cam Nooner had two hits. Linder, Hannah Pratt and Taylor Walton had doubles.

Hannah Roberts and Walton did the pitching for the Falcons, with Walton pitching three innings of shutout relief.

KANNAPOLIS — Morgan Brown pitched South Rowan to a 7-2 win against A.L. Brown on Monday.

Brown pitched a complete game.

MOCKSVILLE — Davie County lost to West Wilkes, 7-6, on Monday.

Sierra Ferguson  homered and drove in three for the War Eagles. Sydney Wyatt went 3-for-4. Anna Devereaux had two hits.

Prep tennis

  Salisbury open its boys tennis season with a Central Carolina Conference victory over Lexington, 5-4.    

Winning for the Hornets in singles were Roarke Burton, Jander Rodas, Adam Drye  and Sean Archer.

Burton/Drye won in doubles, 8-0.

College golf

Lenoir-Rhyne holds a one-shot lead over host Catawba after Monday’s first day of the Richard Rendleman Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament.  at the par-71 Country Club of Salisbury.

The Bears shot a 286 total with the Catawba Indians at 287. Georgia College sits in third with a score of 290.  Catawba’s Tanner Bibey and Trey Burton carded 1-under 70s in the opening round. Tyler Mulkey  (North Rowan) shot 71.

Catawba’s women are  in eighth place after the opening round of the Low Country Invitational Women’s Golf Tournament on Monday.

Lenoir-Rhyne set the pace for with a 304 score. The Bears lead Lincoln Memorial and Western Michigan by seven shots. Catawba posted a 334 total.

Individually, Catawba’s Kaley Barts is in a four-way tie for the  lead after opening with a 73.

College softball

The Pfeiffer softball team (11-1) had little trouble with Averett (4-10) on Sunday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 14-4. Both games went five innings.

Catawba battled Limestone to a doubleheader split in softball on Sunday afternoon at Babe Ruth Field. The Catawba Indians won the opener 8-1, with the Saints taking the second, 2-1.

Catawba (10-8)  connected for four home runs, two by winning pitcher Preston Ellenberg, in the victory. Carlee Brawley led off the game with homer and Leah Huggins adding a two-run shot in the fifth.

Catawba’s game with King was pushed back from today to Wednesday.

College baseball

The Pfeiffer baseball team (10-4) saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end with an 8-7 defeat at the hands of Greensboro (5-5) on Sunday afternoon. The winning streak matched the longest since 2004.

College lacrosse

  Catawba knocked off visiting Florida Tech, 15-7, in men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

Chase Scott, Cole Fanzo and Dalton Cook all had three goals for Catawba.

  Catawba goalie Kevin Geiger has been named the SAC Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for games played Feb. 26-Mar. 4.

Women’s basketball

Top-seeded Carson-Newman will host the Southeast Regional that will be played on March 9, 10 and 12.

Wingate is seeded second. Anderson is eighth.

North Georgia is third, Lander fourth, Limestone fifth,  Barton sixth and Columbus State seventh.

Men’s basketball

Tre Williams (Carson) scored 13 points as the Claflin University’s men’s basketball team defeated Clark Atlanta University, 69-61, on Saturday for the school’s first SIAC title.

Claflin heads to the D-II playoffs and is seeded third in the regional hosted by Morehouse. Claflin takes a 25-6 record into the tournament. Claflin plays Clark Atlanta again in the first round of the South Regional on March 10.

Top-seeded Lincoln Memorial will host the Southeast Regional that will be played on March 10, 11 and 13.

Queens is the No. 2 seed.  Carson-Newman is No. 5.

Conference Carolinas tournament champ Lees-McRae is seeded seventh, while King is No. 8.

UNC Pembroke is seeded third, with Clayton State fourth, and Francis Marion sixth.
