Area Sports Briefs: Bowden adds regional, national honors

Catawba first baseman Chance Bowden (Salisbury) added regional and national accolades on Thursday for his extraordinary effort against Coker’s baseball team last weekend.

Bowden already had been named SAC Hitter of the Week. He had three homers in a game, drove in 10 while going 8-for-8 in a doubleheader, and had a school-record 70th double.

College baseball

Freshman John Owen (East Rowan) won his first college decision for Pitt CC.

Owen has struck out 13 while walking three in his early outings.

Mars Hill freshman Brandon Walton (West Rowan) saw action for the Lions on the hill and got his first college strikeout.

College basketball

Catawba senior post player Terri Rogers was named first team All-SAC on  Thursday, and teammate Serena Brown made the second team.

Catawba’s Taisha DeShazo and Talia Barnes made the SAC’s All-Freshman team.

Co-Players of the Year were Marta Miscenko, Wingate, and Haris Price, Carson-Newman

Freshman of the Year: Qua Hines, Lincoln Memorial.  Defensive Player of the Year: Alexis Dillard, Anderson Coach of the Year: Mike Mincey, Carson-Newman

College football

Former North Rowan defensive lineman Wesley Jefferies, who played at Feather River CC the last two seasons, has been offered by North Dakota.

Prep basketball

Davie’s Cooper Wall, Michaea Walton and Owen McCormack made the All-CPC basketball team.

Raffle

The Coast to Coast Life Skills fundraising raffle is in its final days.

The drawing is March 3.

Proceeds go to feed the hungry in Rowan County and Hampton Roads, Va.

First prize is a 50-inch Samsung Smart television, and there also are prizes for second and third.

Ticket sales are $5 or 5 tickets for $20.
