Livingstone women fall to Rams in overtime, 83-77

WINSTON-SALEM — Livingstone went into overtime here Saturday with Winston-Salem State, but fell to the Rams, 83-77, in CIAA women’s basketball action.

The loss was the Blue Bears’ fourth straight and 16 of their last 17. Coach Tiffany Silver’s team is 6-20 overall and 1-15 in league games. W-S State improves to 13-12 and 8-8.

The Rams swept the season series with Livingstone, having won 83-72 in Salisbury on Feb. 3.

The Blue Bears had a furious rally in the fourth quarter to force overtime. W-S State led by nine points at 68-59, with four minutes left. But Livingstone went on an 11-2 run to end regulation, led by baskets from Asia Green, I’Keya Bland and Nina Robinson. Taylor Perkins then sank two free throws with 1:08 left to tie the score at 70-70.

Both teams then had a chance to win in regulation but Perkins missed a layup with 10 seconds left and WSSU’s Teara Johnson failed on two foul shots with two ticks remaining.

In the extra session, Livingstone actually took a 76-75 lead with 1:45 left, but the Rams finished the game with an 8-1 rally.

Perkins, a freshman, matched her career-high with 24 points to lead Livingstone. Green followed with 15 points and Bland added 13. Green also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Tiana Edwards paced the Rams with 21 points and Kandace Tate added 17. Briana Arnold had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Both teams will see action in next week’s CIAA Tournament in Charlotte. Livingstone will play Lincoln at 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday. WSSU also plays on Tuesday, at 4:30, against Elizabeth City State.
