Childress moves up at Dustin Johnson championship

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — Michael Childress of Salisbury shot a 74 on Saturday, moved up two spots and is tied for 16th place after two rounds of the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship at TPC Myrtle Beach.

Childress, one of 10 golfers from North Carolina in the 65-player field, shot a 3-over par 75 on Friday for his two-round score of 149. The tournament, which included three international players, concludes today.

Childress is seven strokes off the lead of Yuki Moriyama, a high school sophomore from Las Vegas. He has two rounds under par — 1-under par 71s on both Friday and Saturday.

Michael Brennan, of Leesburg, Va., also a sophomore, is one stroke behind Moriyama at 143 (72-71). Those two are the only golfers under par.

Akshay Bhatia, of Wake Forest, N.C., still another sophomore, is in third place with an even-par score of 144 (73-71).

Childress is a senior at Cannon School in Concord and has signed to play at the University of Richmond. On Saturday, he had had three birdies in his round, including two straight on holes 11 and 12, both par 4s. Childress also had 10 pars and five bogeys.

Lansdon Robbins, of Davidson, Childress’ teammate at Cannon, is also tied for 16th. Robbins had a 74 on Friday and 75 on Saturday. carded a 74, tying him for 11th place.

Emily Hawkins, of Lexington, is one of 24 players in the girls’ field for the tournament. Hawkins, a home-schooled senior who has signed with Campbell, shot an 80 on Friday but an 87 yesterday. She missed the cut for today’s final round.

Alexa Pano, of Lake Worth, Fla., fired a 4-under 68 on Friday and despite Saturday’s 76, holds a three-stroke lead over Ashley Menne of Surprise, Ariz. Pano, an eighth-grader, is at even par for the tournament (144).
