Final days of ‘Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge 1718’ 

SPENCER — Through Feb. 27 at the NC Transportation Museum: the traveling exhibit of weaponry, nautical tools and personal items recovered from the pirate’s wrecked flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

Coming Feb. 25: “How the West Was Won: Trains and the Transformation of Western North Carolina” tells the story of the coming of the railroads after the Civil War.

Castlebay: Bards & Blarney

7 p.m. Feb. 27: The Friends of Rowan Public Library and Cheerwine Concert Series returns with Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee of Castlebay performing “Irish Bards & Blarney.” Celebrating the Irish bardic tradition with poetry and legends accompanied by music and songs inspired by Celtic literature and lore. ‘Hear America Sing’

4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25: In Catawba’s Omwake-Dearborn Chapel the Catawba Singers, PopAC, and Chamber Choir present “Hear America Sing” featuring well-known works by classical American composers plus music from the gospel and popular genres. The combined 80-voice ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Phillip E. Burgess, and will be accompanied by Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette. The hour long concert is free and open to the public.

 

Scottssing presents Mercy’s Well in concert

John Hart: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 1: Features “The Hush,” Hart’s followup to “The Last Child.” Only books purchased through South Main Book Company will be available for John to sign.

Dr. M.J. Simms-Maddox: 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 2: She will be signing the middle book in The Priscilla Trilogy, “Mystery in Harare.” The first book was “Priscilla: Engaging in the Game of Politics.” Simms-Madox is a political science professor at Livingstone College.

 

Call for artists

Be an exhibitor at various Rowan Arts & Ag events in 2018. Throughout the year events will occur around Rowan County showcasing local farms and artisans.

The first event is April 7 from 3-8 p.m. in Gold Hill. If you create handcrafted pieces of art or handmade items, sign up at www.RowanArtsandAg.com by March 31.

GREENSBORO — North Carolina Folk Festival announces call for food vendors for the free Folk Festival to be held Sept. 7-9 and will feature hundreds of performers on multiple stages. Applications are available at ncfolkfestival.com/food. Prospective vendors should submit applications by March 5.

 

6th annual Justin Monroe and Victor Isler Memorial Skeet Shoot

‘Anything Goes’ group exhibit at Rail Walk

Feb. 21-April 28; Resident artists of Rail Walk Studios were invited to submit work with no prescribed theme or medium yielding an impressive and varied exhibition.

The group is inviting visitors to participate in community art by painting on canvas set up in the gallery with acrylic paint and brushes provided. The resulting group works will be given as door prizes at the reception on Friday, April 27 5:30-7:30 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
