Building Better Caregivers class
The first of six sessions of a workshop called “Building Better Caregivers” will be Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 1:30-4 p.m. at 1416 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. The Tuesday sessions run through March 27 and are sponsored by Lutheran Services Carolinas and Centralina Area Agency on Aging.
The workshop will help reduce stress for both caregivers and care partners, provide strategies for managing difficult care partner behaviors, and help participants plan for the future.

Rowan Genealogical Society
The Rowan Genealogical Society will meet at the Salisbury Public Library at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20. This month’s program will feature the research of the Rhoads-Havis connection to NC & SC. All are always welcome to discover the ins and outs of genealogical research.
Rowan Tea Party on school choice
A good education is critical for good jobs and quality of life. On Tuesday, Feb. 20 the Rowan County Tea Party will host a special program on school choice. Held at BlueBay Seafood Restaurant on Statesville Blvd. with dinner and fellowship at 6 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m.
Lifeguarding classes
The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan Branch is currently registering for 2018 Lifeguarding Classes. Classes are March 16-23, May 4-11 and Sept. 7-14. Cost is $190 YMCA members and $220 for non-members. Must be age 15 at time of registration and successfully complete a prerequisite swim test. Register at www.rowanymca.org or at the branch. Lifeguarding Recertification Classes are April 27-28, May 11-12 and Sept. 28-29. Cost for recertification is $103 for YMCA members and $133 for non-members. CONCORD —The Feb. 20 meeting of the Southern Piedmont Woodturners will feature Sam McDowell, speciaalist in working with green, or wet, wood. Rowan Redbuds meet Thursday
The next Rowan Redbuds Garden Club meeting is Thursday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. in the Stanback Room of the Rowan Public Library, 201 West Fisher St. Amy-Lynn Albertson, director, Rowan County Cooperative Extension Service, will present a program on “Hot Plants.” Guests are welcome.
Shop for A Cure
On Saturday, Feb. 24 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Rowan County Fairgrounds, shop more than 30 Craft, direct sales, and food vendors to support Walk MS: working to find a cure to Multiple Sclerosis. ‘Hear America Sing’
On Sunday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. in Catawba College’s Omwake-Dearborn Chapel, the Catawba Singers, PopAC, and Chamber Choir will present a free afternoon of choral music. The concert, “Hear America Sing” will feature well-known works by classical American composers as well as music from the Gospel and popular genres.
Works presented on the program include hymn settings by Aaron Copland, Precious Lord by Thomas Dorsey, Erb’s haunting setting of Shenandoah, a highly unusual version of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair, a rhythmic version of Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson and Home made famous by Phillip Phillips.
The combined 80-voice ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Phillip E. Burgess and accompanied by Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette.
