SALISBURY — A man wanted in a murder on Gheen Road has turned himself into Rowan County Sheriff Kevin Auten. The apprehension of Taedrin DaShawn Sanders, 22, comes a day after investigators say he shot and killed Gregory Yarborough Friday evening.

Around 10 a.m. Auten was contacted by someone in the community whom he’d developed a relationship during his 30-year law enforcement career. The person expressed a “desire to work out a meeting with the sheriff so that the suspect could turn himself in peacefully, without any further incident,” a statement said.

A meeting spot was arranged for 11:30 a.m. at a local Salisbury business. Auten met with Sanders at the agreed-upon time and location and he “submitted himself peacefully into the custody of the sheriff,” the statement said.

The suspect also turned over the handgun used in the homicide.

“This is a prime example of Rowan County citizens and law enforcement working together to fight crime,” Auten said.

Rowan officials said on Friday around 3:37 p.m. deputies were called to a reported shooting at 1270 Gheen Road, located off U.S. 601.

The caller said a man was shot. When deputies arrived they found Yarborough, of Hope Hill Road, injured and not breathing. A deputy performed CPR, but it was unsuccessful. The 21-year-old died at the scene. He’d been shot multiple times, officials said. Sanders left the scene.

“The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office would like to express a thank you to the Rowan County citizens, and to the news media for their assistance in getting this suspect in custody within less than 24 hours after the crime was committed,” officials said.

Sheriff Auten took Sanders to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office for processing and then Sanders was taken to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office. He remains in the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office under no bond. He is scheduled for a first appearance Monday.

Detectives with the Rowan County Sheriff’s criminal investigations division and the SBI investigated this murder.
