Salisbury Lions’ 75th annual awards banquet 

The Salisbury Lions Club and invited dignitaries gathered for the 75th annual Man/Woman/Lion of the Year Award Banquet at the Harold B. Jarrett Legion Hall. Among those in attendance were Mr. Arnold Chamberlain, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Smith, Mr. Glen Ketner and Ms. Susan Kluttz.

This year’s celebration was held as a luncheon, with a large number of Lions members and former winners present. Lunch was preceded by the Pledge of Allegiance and invocation, and followed by the presentations of the Lion of the Year and Man of the Year Awards.

2018 Lion of the year is Don Conner. With the resignation of the club’s treasurer late in 2017, Lion Conner stepped up to take the helm. He has instituted changes to make the accounting easier and the club has flourished under his financial leadership. In addition, as a member of the SPOT camera committee, he used his knowledge of IT to guide the club in making the most of this revolutionary device and is the trainer for the club’s SPOT camera operators.

“Don has been there when we needed him and sometimes when we didn’t even know we needed him,” said Don Hesprich, club president.

2018 Man of the year was awarded to Lion Larry Hess. Mr. Hess has been a Lion for many years and has held just about every club position. He is a retired Marine and businessman, a former NASCAR driver and a mechanical genius. He has brought the wisdom gleaned from 50 years of leading Blast-It-All to the club, and is due all the honor this award connotes.

After the presentations, President Hesprich closed with remarks: “Being legally blind myself, I joined Lions in order to raise awareness and hopefully to prevent this sort of thing happening to anyone else. These men are true Lions and faithful citizens of Salisbury. Their leadership and generosity made the acquisition of the SPOT camera a reality. With this tool the Salisbury Lions Club takes a major leap forward in fighting vision loss.”

AAUW lecture series features teacher 

From 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, Amy McCachren, K-5 visual arts teacher at the American Renaissance Charter School in Statesville, will present “Current Issues in Public and Private Education” from the perspective of a charter school teacher. Ms. McCachren began teaching in the Rowan-Salisbury school system and taught second grade at Cleveland Elementary School for seven years where she also led a weekly drama club. She has been teaching at American Renaissance Charter School since it opened in the fall of 1998, the year after charter schools were approved in North Carolina. In addition to attending and presenting at various Charter School conferences she help start the Odyssey of the Mind program at the charter school which is still going strong. She attended Catawba College where she received a bachelors degree in Theatre Arts, and training for certification in Elementary Education. Later she also earned a certification in Visual Arts Education.

Light refreshments will be provided. This event is sponsored by American Association of University Women, Salisbury branch and is held at the Fellowship Hall of First UCC, 207 W. Horah St., ground entrance at the rear of the church.

Enjoy an evening with Charles A. Cannon

KANNAPOLIS — Kannapolis History Associates assures you there is no error — Mr. Charles A. Cannon, president of Cannon Mills, will be our guest speaker for the February meeting and will share parts of his personal story about his beginnings in the textile world for which he became famous as a great industrialist. Bring your own favorite story, memory or photos of Mr. Cannon to share. This is a postlude to the Charles A. Cannon film, “Charles A Cannon: A Mind for Business. A Heart for People,” which premiered in October and recently on TV. Our originally scheduled presentation in September was postponed due to inclement weather.
