Letter: Behold, the salad bowl

Re: Hugh Martin’s letter of Jan. 28, “US is not a melting pot any more”:
Since its inception, the common view was that America is a melting pot where cultures merge and subjugate themselves into one identity for the common good (giving us our motto, E pluribus unum, “Out of many, one”). I remember being in elementary school in the 1960s when the idea was floated that instead, America should be a salad bowl where cultures come together, yet retain their own customs and interests. That was largely viewed as a quaint and innocent idea at the time.
We now know it was the beginning of identity politics, multiculturalism and what is turning out to be a very successful strategy of destroying America through a strategy of divide and conquer. Today’s emphasis on diversity, based on income, race, gender and every other conceivable demographic can be traced back to the time when the melting pot was errantly replaced by the salad bowl.
