Salisbury-Rowan Church Women United meet

Salisbury-Rowan Church Women United celebrated World Community Day on November 3, 2017 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Rev. Olen Bruner, host pastor,  welcomed 106 women and men. Unit President, Dorothy Gill-Smith, Moore’s Chapel AME Zion, and World Community Day Celebration Chair, Gloria Bradshaw, First Calvary Baptist, welcomed everyone as they gave the history and purpose of the celebration.The opening prayer was given by Flo Peck, First United Church of Christ. The Gathering song was “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” Dottie Clement, First Presbyterian was the pianist. The theme, “Kindling New Fires For Peace,” was presented through prayers and a reading of the Golden Rule from the Major World Religions: Buddhism, Baha’i, Sikhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity. Participants were Penny Knox, Soldier’s Memorial AME Zion; Manie Richardson, Milford Hills UMC; Montrella Davis, Sacred Heart Catholic; Sarah Byerly, Christ UMC; Gloria Bradshaw, First Calvary Missionary Baptist, Anita Hovis, Moores’s Chapel AME Zion.  Each table was given the task of discussing how to build a better community. The ideas were written on a large banner which was displayed. An offering was received which will be used to support causes of peace and justice in the world. Ecumenical Action Chair, Mary Marlin, collected gift cards and toiletries for the Family Crisis Council.

SRCWU held a planning meeting at Milford Hills UMC on Jan. 16. President Dorothy Gill-Smith led the assembly of 2018 Church Representatives, Celebration Chairs and Officers through plans for the coming year. The theme for the 2018 is “Reaching for Wholeness: In Gratitude for God’s Presence, In Harmony with God’s People, In Solidarity with God’s Creation.” The following meetings and celebrations will take place: Annual Meeting, Southern City AME Zion, February 4, 3 pm; Prayer Breakfast, First Calvary Baptist, March 3, 8:30 am; May Friendship Day, Trinity Presbyterian, May 4, 11:30 am; Human Rights Celebration, Moore’s Chapel AME Zion, August 3, 6 pm; World Community Day, November 2, location to be determined. These events are open to anyone who would like to attend. All are welcome.
