EAST SPENCER — A 17-year-old was shot in the shoulder Monday morning at Grant Street Apartments.

East Spencer Police Chief Sharon Hovis said Jameon Sanders was in an apartment with two other minors when Sanders was shot.

Police are not sure whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, Hovis said.

Sanders does not live in the apartment where he was shot, she said. Sanders is banned from the apartment complex, Hovis said, but she did not specify why.

Hovis said Sanders was able to speak with police officers but that he was not forthcoming with information.

Sanders went to the emergency room after the shooting.

Hovis said the two other people in the apartment at the time of the shooting also did not speak with officers.

“We still have to investigate and look into it,” Hovis said.

The woman who lives in the apartment was at work at the time of the shooting, Hovis said.

Police are not sure what the relationship is among the apartment resident, the minors and Sanders, she said.

“And as far as (Sanders), it’s apparent that he’s been staying here. We just don’t know for how long,” Hovis said.

Hovis said there was no evidence of a struggle.

Sanders has a record that includes previous convictions for breaking into cars, participating in an attempted beating of a homeless man and stealing firearms from vehicles.
