SALISBURY– Novant Health Rowan Medical Center has three new local hospital board members: John C. Everett, Fred F. Steen II and Jack van der Poel. They will serve three-year terms.

Everett is institutional advancement officer with Hood Theological Seminary. Past positions include senior major gifts officer for Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center and Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. He has also been director of major gifts at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, where he was an adjunct professor in the school of business and finance.

Also in Columbia, he served as vice president of finance and business with Potter’s Christian Life Center and was a financial adviser at UBS Financial Services.

Everett served in the Navy, providing logistical support at the Navy Medical Center in Okinawa, Japan, as head of materials management. He received the Navy Commendation Medal for outstanding leadership and service in that position.

Everett holds a bachelor’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He and his wife live in Clemmons and have two adult sons and one grandchild.

Steen is  a member of the Board of Review of Higher Appeals for Unemployment Benefits, representing employers in the division of employment security and legal services. He was appointed to a four-year term by former Gov. Pat McCrory in 2016.

Steen served as the chief legislative director for McCrory from 2013 to 2016. He represented part of Rowan County in the N.C. House from 2004 through 2012, and before that served as mayor of Landis.

Steen’s career includes 28 years with Fieldcrest Cannon in Kannapolis as an industrial engineer and with Collins and Aikman as a cost analyst. He is a graduate of UNC-Charlotte, where he majored in business administration.

Steen owns a business in Kannapolis and assists his wife, Tena, with her business, Shatley Blue event center in Kannapolis.

Van der Poel is vice president and chief financial officer for Shoe Show, a shoe retailer headquartered in Concord with more than 1,000 locations in 45 states. Van der Poel formerly worked in the accounting, finance and auditing divisions of Food Lion and Burlington Industries. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and is a certified public accountant.

Van der Poel lives in Salisbury, is married to the former Cheryl Doby, and has two sons and a stepson.
