SALISBURY — Rowan-Salisbury Schools will be on a two-hour delay for students Friday.

According to Rita Foil, the district’s public information officer, the delay is because of the extreme cold forecasters are calling for Friday morning.

Staff members should report to schools as usual, Foil said — but not neglect their own safety. If conditions are hazardous, they should use their own judgment and play it safe, she said.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures between 6 and 8 a.m. Friday will be about 12 degrees, with a wind chill of between 4 and 6 degrees. The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory in effect from midnight to 10 a.m. Friday.

A wind chill advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken.

The delay will give children more time indoors and allow buses more time at each stop so that children can stay sheltered as long as possible.

The school system reminds parents to dress children warmly in preparation for the cold.

Kannapolis City Schools will also be on a two-hour delay, with district leaders citing low temperatures and strong winds.
