Davis gives back to RHM

Donations of handcrafted crochet/knit hats and handmade soap bars were submitted to Rowan Helping Ministries on Wednesday, December 20, by Marie Davis, owner of the nonprofit Ria’s Creations Inc. and daughter Laquita Venable, owner of Soothing Times.

The GQHS class of 1948 held its 69th reunion on Nov. 11 at the K&W cafeteria in Salisbury. Classmates and guests were welcomed as they arrived at 10:30 a.m.

There was time to talk about family and the good old days and the friends we made, some who are no longer with us.

When it was time for lunch, Buddy Foster had the invocation, and as usual the time was enjoyed by everyone.

A meeting was then held to decide on a date for our 70th reunion next year. Those who served on last year’s committee were asked to serve again, getting them to let everyone know the where and when, and the time and date for our next reunion.

Local classmates from Salisbury were Doris Cline, Rose McCombs Holshouser and spouse Glenn; Faye Cauble Kesler, Mary Frances Oddie Wells.

Out of town classmates were Buddy Foster and wife Treva from Sherrills Ford; Anna Mae Rickter and daughter Brenda from Concord; and Glenn Webb and wife Martha from Stoneville.

Salisbury Lions celebrate Christmas with V.I.P.s

Many of Rowan’s V.I.P.s (Visually Impaired Persons), their guests and members of Rowan County’s Lions Clubs were on hand to celebrate the 69th annual Christmas Dinner held at First Baptist Church in Salisbury, on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Volunteers from the many Lions clubs represented in Rowan County (Cleveland, Franklin-Ellis, Gold Hill, Rockwell and Salisbury) were on hand to provide food, fun and presents for the V.I.P.s. Lions from around the county spoke and handed out presents of flowers, fruit baskets and special gifts.

Speakers were kept to a minimum to allow more time for singing and dancing. Wanda Foil, a V.I.P. with the Franklin-Ellis club, led a good ole’ sing-along and Liz Steele of the Cleveland Lions Club led the V.I.P.s in an open discussion to get better acquainted. Almost all shared when and how they lost their sight and what sorts of things they were doing now.

Many talked about being thankful for the Rowan Ramblers and Camp Dogwood. The Rowan Ramblers is an organization of the Rowan Parks and Recreation Department that organizes trips for the V.I.P.s both in and out of the county. Camp Dogwood is a one-of-a-kind camp built by the North Carolina Lions Inc. specifically for the blind and those with low vision, and is located on the banks of Lake Norman.

Most of all they were thankful for being able to gather together again, with many having not seen each other since leaving Camp Dogwood in the summer.Gifts were exchanged and each VIP received a gift card from “Santa.”
