S-R Choral Society presents ‘Tales of St. Nicholas: The Art of the Gift’
If you were kept in by bad weather last weekend, you are invited to enjoy the holidays with the Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society’s concert “Tales of St. Nicholas: The Art of the Gift” on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 7:30 pm at First United Church of Christ, 207 West Horah Street, Salisbury. Catawba graduate Matthew Newton will direct familiar Christmas songs: “Still, Still, Still”and “Fum, Fum, Fum,” and new tunes—“Ding-a Ding-a Ding” and “Season of Light” plus “The Night Before Christmas” and a jazzy “Jolly Old St. Nicholas.” Please bring a new unwrapped toy for children served by Rowan Department of Social Services. This concert, supported by the Rowan Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council celebrating fifty years, is funded by the state of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Jubilee Community Choir annual Christmas concert
Sunday Dec 17 at 5 p.m. at Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, 306 N. Church St.
This year’s concert features traditional carols plus a gospel-influenced arrangement of “Sweet Little Jesus Boy” by Horace Scruggs III, the Christmas spiritual “Here’s a Pretty Little Baby” and “Shout for Joy,” arranged by André Thomas. Also featured will be guest saxophonist Gavin Crisp plus liturgical dance renditions by Natalia House, providing visual and aural interpretations to several choral selections.
Concert soloists are Doris Goodman, Sarah J. Norman and Rebecca Stinson. Kay Wright Norman is the music Director for the Jubilee Community Choir. Refreshments will follow in the Enrichment Center. A free will offering will be received.
Rowan Big Band All Stars at Lee Street theatre
7:30 p.m. Dec 15: This 18-piece community big band in the style of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington maintains a long tradition of big-band standards and swing era favorites from the 1930s through the present day. Tickets are $20 + tax. 329 N. Lee St, 704-310-5507, www.leestreet.org
St John’s Service of Lessons and Carol
11 a.m. Dec. 17: St John’s Lutheran Church. Carols and anthems by the Chancel Choir, St John’s Men’s Chorus, St John’s Women’s Ensemble, soloists and Instrumental Ensemble. The music of Handel, Forrest, Rutter and others composers will be featured.
FUMC Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols
The Stanback Department of Sacred Music of First United Methodist Church presents its annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Sunday at 5 p.m. The service is presented in the same format as the Christmas Eve service held at King’s College, Cambridge, England in 1918. Accompanying the choirs of First Church will be a brass quintet, organ, harp, and flute. Lectors include representatives from current church leadership and Rowan Helping Ministries, Hood Theological Seminary, Meals on Wheels, and Salisbury Symphony. The choirs will be conducted by Matthew Michael Brown. Repertoire includes music by Paul Halley, Francis Poulenc, Daniel Elder, Kim André Arnesen, Sally Ann Morris, Norman Luboff, David Willcocks, and others. Book signing with Patti Fogt
On Wednesday, Dec. 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Mean Mug Coffee Co., meet children’s author and illustrator Patti Laughlin Fogt for a book signing event. The Battle of the Gods and Goddesses Fashion Show returns to Salisbury on Dec 30, showcasing local talent as well as talent from surrounding cities, models, designers, make-up artists, hair stylists, and vendors. This community fundraiser is sponsored by Great Women and Men United and Precision Management Marketing to create funds for the Save the Youth Program. Bennett Place celebrates Christmas during the Civil War

DURHAM — During the war both soldiers and civilians tried to celebrate the holiday. Soldiers would decorate their winter quarter with what they had on hand and looked forward to receiving packages from home. For southern families the blockade, rising prices, food shortages as well as thoughts of their loved ones away from home made celebrating the holiday more difficult. Bennett Place State Historic Site will give voice to the soldiers and civilians, men and women, attempting to celebrate the holiday with a special event on Saturday.
There will be ongoing living history demonstrations of life in the field as well as on the home front. Watch as soldiers decorate their camps, read letters and open packages sent from home. In the kitchen, women will be baking and preparing food. Examples of items often sent to the soldiers will be on display in the historic house. Santa will also be on site. Hot apple cider and cookies will be available at the visitor center as well as a bake sale. All proceeds from the bake sale go toward the preservation of the site. Admission is free.
On Saturday evening: Take a guided tour by candlelight around the property and experience how soldiers and civilians celebrated the holiday. You will go into the field to watch as Union and Confederate soldiers hold a truce and exchange items. You will visit a camp and watch as soldiers receive packages from home. The tour will then take you to the home front as families tried to cook holiday food as well as decorate their homes and try to carry on the holiday spirit.
Complimentary hot apple cider and cookies will be available inside the visitor center. Hours are 6-9 p.m. Cost: $3 for adults and $2.00 for children ages 5-16 Children under 5 – FREE.
