The Salisbury Elks

Submitted

The Salisbury Elks  Club held a special edition of its monthly bingo at the Salisbury VA. This month, The Hot Dog Shack brought all they could eat hot dogs (with all the fixin’s), chips, soda and dessert. Santa showed up and we handed out goody bags to every veteran who was present. It included hats, gloves, necessities, candy, snacks and fresh fruit. A good time was had by all.

Salisbury Lion’s Club

Submitted

For over 85 years the Salisbury Lion’s Club has been fighting vision problems in the young and old. To this end, Overton Elementary school nurses have invited the North Carolina Lion’s Inc. Mobile Screening Unit to assist them in screening 1st, 3rd and 5th graders.

This has been going on for more than eight years and the latest screening shows some rewards. On Dec. 5, Rowan-Salisbury School System nurses and Salisbury Lion’s Club volunteers screened 192 children. Fourteen of those screened showed signs of vision loss and were screened further at the Mobile Screening Unit. This represents a 6.8 percent referral rate. In past years the rate has been 16-18 percent. It is believed that, as a result of screening, overall vision is being positively impacted.

In the very near future, the Salisbury Lion’s Club will be instituting its new Spot Camera Program, which will enable more and faster screening as well as screening of younger children and handicapped children.
