Area Sports Briefs: Davie sweeps Wonders

Davie County’s boys basketball team stayed undefeated by topping A.L. Brown at home, 76-62, on Wednesday. Davie (4-0) shot 13-for-25 on 3s.

“Kannapolis was really athletic, more athletic than we are, and they presented  a tough matchup,” Davie coach Mike Absher said. “Fortunately, we shot the ball extremely well. We never could pull away from them, but we led just about all the way.”

Davie led by only five points going to the fourth quarter, but the War Eagles kept making 3-pointers and finally achieved separation.

Junior guard Michael Walton scored 20 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to lead Davie.

Jacob Hendrix scored 19 points and made five 3-pointers. Owen McCormack had 12 points, and Brooks Johnson scored 11. Cooper Wall had a big dunk and piled up assists.

Jordan Medley, the A.L. Brown quarterback who keyed a football victory over Davie, scored 17 points for the Wonders (2-2). Jalen Klutz had 12.

Davie County’s girls picked up their second straight win by beating A.L. Brown, 49-39.

“We beat an extremely athletic team,” Davie coach Kevin Revels said. “Their coach (Andrew Porter) did a lot of good things. They’re going to be a very tough team later in the season.”

Senior guard Trinity Hayes keyed the War Eagles’ effort. She scored 17 points and hit a back-breaking 3-pointer with a little over a minute left for an eight-point lead.  Maddie Tellup, a junior  forward, had 10 points for DC (2-3).

Jala Campbell scored nine for the Wonders  (1-4).

Carson’s girls rolled against South Rowan, 45-24, on Wednesday. Kary Hales scored 14 points for the Cougars, while Victoria Post had 11. Lindsay Conrad and Jaden Vaughn were defensive standouts.

Akira Harrington led South with eight points. Paige Chabala had five.

Appalachian State defensive lineman Myquon Stout (Carson) was Honorable Mention on the All-Sun Belt Conference team.

Fifty-seven GARS members played a Texas Scramble at Corbin Hills.

Three teams tied for first place at minus-4.

The team of Ernest Wagner, Bernard Caldwell, Johnny Graham and Tom Seamon won first place in a scorecard playoff over the team of Allen Hammill, Jesse King, Tommy Lambert and Denny Wenker and the team of David Schenk, Winsten Mahaffey, Frank Masingo and  Roger Costic. Closest to the pin on No. 2 was won by Tom Dodge. Longest putt on No. 9 was  by Karl Osborne.
