Area Sports Briefs: West wrestlers win

West Rowan’s wrestling team won against Northwest Cabarrus, 45-31, on Thursday.

West (2-0) got pins from Holden Mesimer (106), Gavin Coffield 138), Luke Waggoner (160) and Alex Erazo had pins for the Falcons.

Lane Bolmer (152) won a major decision.

Devon Pena (113) and Luke Harrison (120) won by forfeit, and West got a win at 126.

Cavs make All-YVC

North Rowan’s Nicole Bates made the 1A All-Yadkin Valley Conference tennis team, while NR’s McKenzie Shoaf was named All-YVC in volleyball.

North Rowan placed nine on the All-YVC football team: offensive lineman Will Anthony; receiver Quintous Smith Jr.; running back Jaleel Webster; quarterback Willis Mitchell; defensive lineman Matthew Hoosier and Darren Williams,  linebacker Tyzai Lyles, punter Jacob Young and DB Xzavier Davis.

North Stanly swept the  top honors. Cameron Davis was named YVC Offensive Player of the Year, and C.J. Clark was named YVC Defensive Player of the Year.

North Stanly’s Scott Crisco was named YVC Coach of the Year.

North Rowan DB Jaharion Graham was on the Honorable Mention list.

Prep basketball

Carson’s teams will be playing at Pfeiffer’s Merner Gym this weekend.

Carson’s boys play at 7:30 tonight against Northwest Cabarrus and on Saturday at 7:30 against North Hills Christian.

Carson’s girls are taking on Northwest Cabarrus at 4:30 today and will play Cox Mill at 3 on Saturday.

Hickory Ridge’s girls rolled past Robinson, 78-51, on Thursday.

Gabby Smith scored 21 points for the Bulls. Nia Daniel scored 14.

Jada McMillan scored 19 to lead the Bulldogs.

Jayvee basketball

South Rowan’s boys topped Ledford, 45-38, and are off to a 2-0 start.

Local golf

Sixty-seven members played in their own foursomes at the The Revival at the Crescent Golf Club.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Donald Martin with a net of 67.47.

Low ‘B’Flight player was Tommy Lambert with a net of 64.43. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ken Miller with a net of 61.68. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Larry Luther with a net of 62.21.

Low gross was Gerald Barker with a 76.

Winsten Mahaffey, 80, shot an 80; Ken Miller, 82, shot an 82; O.J. Chandler, 88, shot an 81, and J.C. Ritchie 93, shot an 87.

Donald Smith made a hole-in-one on the 120-yard No. 8 hole. He was playing with Bill Saunders and Ron Bowers.

Middle school hoops

China Grove’s girls won against Erwin, 45-42, on Thursday, ending a 56-game winning streak by the Eagles.

Iyonna Parker scored 17 to lead the Red Devils. Bethany Rymer scored 13.

Haley Dalton led Erwin with 17 points. Hannah Isley scored nine.

Knox defeated Southeast, 51-47, in boys basketball.

Cameron Stout led the Trojans with 22 points. Justin Taylor added 12 points.

Erwin’s boys defeated China Grove, 44-35.

  Cameron Padgett had  17 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles. Nick Dale scored nine, Kane Kepley had six, and Dylan Valley scored five.

College soccer

  Top-seeded and second-ranked Carson-Newman will head to its first ever national nhampionship after knocking off No. 3 seed UC Colorado Springs, 2-1,    on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles (21-0-1) are the first team ever in any women’s sport in the South Atlantic Conference  to make it to the national title game.
