Area Sports Briefs: Wins for Carson boys, North boys

CHINA GROVE — Carson’s boys shot the lights out early and won against Concord, 82-64, on Tuesday in a non-conference game.

Owen White had a career-high 29 points, Jamarius Hairston scored 24, and Jailen Williams added 22 for the Cougars (2-0).

It was the first time in Carson history that three players have topped 20 points in the same game.

East girls fall

KANNAPOLIS — East Rowan’s girls lost Zee Winford to an injury in the second half and fell to Northwest Cabarrus, 50-33, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.

“ We couldn’t make anything in the first half, but we responded pretty well in the second and third quarters and came back,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “But they hit a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter, and then that injury to Zee kind of deflated us.”

Hollie Harrison led East with 13 points.

Alicia Fields scored 21 for the Trojans.

“We had trouble with their size all night,” Holland said. “Fields is tall and athletic. We couldn’t stop her.”

North boys win

North Rowan’s boys won the debut of head coach Martin Unger, topping Albemarle on Tuesday, 72-68, in 1A Yadkin Valley Conference action.

North was playing Albemarle for the first time in five seasons.

  Dayjuwon Cooke caught fire in the final quarter, scoring 14 of his game-high and career-high 26 points for North Rowan.    Brevin Goodlett and Derrick Page reached double figures for the Cavs, with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Adafe Price, back with the Bulldogs after a season at West Stanly, led Albemarle (1-2) with 21 points.

Neither team led by more than six points throughout the first half. Emotions ran strong in the final minute as double technicals were called on two separate occasions to wrap up the first half.

North Rowan tied the game in the third quarter on two David Broaddus free throws but Albemarle pushed the lead to as much as seven points in the period.

A Quintous Smith 3-pointer triggered a 12-0 run over the first 3:36 of the final period.

The Cavaliers led by as much as 14 points on two different occasions, midway through the fourth quarter, before Albemarle rallied with a 12-2 push, pulling to within four points with a minute left in the game.

Albemarle had possession of the ball in the final 30 seconds but Cooke’s steal and breakaway two-handed dunk sealed the win for North Rowan.

The Cavaliers will have their home opener on Friday, a YVC matchup with the South Stanly Rebel Bulls (0-1).

North girls lose

ALBEMARLE — The North Rowan girls led in the third quarter but lost at Albemarle, 47-32, in YVC action on Tuesday.

Makiya McDaniel and Natavia Taborn  scored eight points each to lead North Rowan (0-1).

Krystin McLendon led three players in double figures for Albemarle (2-1) with 13 points.

Leading by nine points after the first quarter, the Bulldogs missed the first nine shots of the second period, allowing the Cavs to pull to within a point, hitting 6-of-8 at the foul line, along with a Taren Sherrill bucket.

Taborn’s bucket midway through the third quarter put North Rowan up, 23-21, but the Bulldogs ended the period on a 10-0 run to lead by seven after three quarters, 31-24.

Albemarle opened the fourth with a 9-0 run for a 40-24 lead, forcing a North timeout at the 6:38 mark.

The Bulldogs led by as much as 21 points, 47-26, with just over two minutes left, before the Cavaliers scored the final six points of the game.

South girls start slow

THOMASVILLE — South Rowan got 31 points from Janiya Downs on Tuesday but lost at East Davidson, 67-58, in the Central Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Downs pushed her career total to 991, and the junior will have a good chance to reach 1,000 at home tonight.

Tazah Hardin added 18 for South.

East Davidson got 29 points from Brooke Anders, who surpassed 1,000 career points. Anders hit six 3-pointers in the first half as the Golden Eagles (3-0, 1-0) built a 41-27 cushion.

Post player Brooke Jones added 17 for East Davidson.

“We got in foul trouble in the first quarter,” South coach John Davis said. “We had two starters with three and Hardin had two in the first quarter, and they took advantage of that and they got really hot shooting the ball.  They called it close and the fouls hurt, but you’ve got to adjust and you’ve got to play through it.”

Hardin slowed down Anders in the second half, but the Raiders never got all the way back.

East boys lose

East Rowan’s boys lost to Tuesday at Northwest Cabarrus, 42-35, in a non-conference game.

Gabe Hinceman led the Mustangs with 14 points.

“It was a defensive battle throughout the night,” East coach Kurt Misenheimer said. “Both teams have big lineups and packed it in on defense. Our bigs got in foul trouble down the stretch.”

South Rowan’s boys lost at East Davidson, 71-63, in the CCC opener for both teams.

It was a one-point game after three quarters.

Carson girls

McKenzie Gadson led the Carson girls (2-1) to an easy 61-18 win against Concord in non-conference basketball on Tuesday.

Carson led 36-10 at halftime.

Gadson finished with 19 points. Freshman Colbie Perry had 11.

CCC girls

North Davidson beat Oak Grove 58-15 on Tuesday in Midway.

Ashley Davis led the Black Knights with 17 points.

Jordan Holt led Oak Grove with five points.

 

SPC girls

Nevaeh Brown scored 16 points to lead Central Cabarrus to a 56-30 win against Forest Hills.

 Aniyah Tate scored 12, and Sophie Ratzloff  had 10.

Carson JVs girls win

Carson’s jayvee girls rolled against Concord, 41-21, on Tuesday.

Victoria Post and Kary Hales scored 10 points apiece.

Defensive standouts were Lindsay Conrad and Tate Barger.

Latoya Johnson led the Spiders with 10 points.

All-NPC soccer

West Rowan’s Cristyan Cabrera and Luke Hager, Carson’s Trace Bigelow and East Rowan’s Alex Kalogeromitros made the All-NPC soccer team.
