Cincinnati’s Chris Smith (West Rowan) had three tackles, including a shared sack, in Sunday’s win vs. Cleveland.

West Rowan opens the season tonight at Lake Norman.

Men’s basketball

Carson-Newman romped against Columbus State, 99-69, on Sunday and is 6-0 for the first time since the 1987-88 season.

The Eagles had six dunks, a school record.

Charles Clark reached 1,800 points for his career.

Carson-Newman hasn’t started 7-0 since 1973.

J.C. Smith started two North Rowan graduates (Michael Bowman and Mailk Ford) in Saturday’s 81-68 win against West Georgia. Bowman had four points and four rebounds.

Claflin’s Tre Williams (Carson) had 11 points, five rebounds and three steals in a 63-57 win vs. Lane on Saturday.

DJ Copeland (A.L. Brown) had 4 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists in Newberry’s 74-72 loss to Bowie State on Sunday. Luke Gibson (North Stanly) made a 3-pointer for the Wolves.

Women’s basketball

Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) had 24 rebounds for Richmond in three games in the Savannah Invitational. Wike had eight points and six rebounds in a win against Savannah State.

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had 13 points and five rebounds for the Braves. Avery Locklear (South Rowan) scored six points.

In McCanless Couples play on Sunday, the team of Harry Owen, Susan Wydner and Ralph & Pam Carver was edged out by Azalee Story, David Honeycutt, Calvin Smith and Walt Kincaid.
