Area Sports Briefs: Catawba wins on road; tough loss for East boys

WINSTON-SALEM,    Jerrin Morrison scored 38 points to lead Catawba to an 83-72 win at Winston-Salem State in men’s basketball action on Tuesday night at the Gaines Center.

Morrison finished one point off his career-high of 39 points which he set as a freshman in overtime against Newberry.

The senior canned 12-of-23 shots, went 6-of-11 from behind the arc and made all eight free throw attempts.

Malik Constantine added 14 points for the Indians (2-2), and RJ Robinson scored 11. Jeremy McLaughlin contributed eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Winston-Salem State took a 39-32 lead to the break, but it was all Catawba in the second half. An 8-0 run that was capped by a pair of Morrison’s 3-pointers erased the deficit in the early in the final half.

  The Indians shot 45 percent for the game and shot 55 percent in the second half.

Jameel Taylor is still out with a sprained ankle.

Robert Colon scored 22 points off the bench to lead the Rams.

Catawba opens SAC play Wednesday at nationally ranked Queens at 8 p.m.

Claflin’s Tre Williams (Carson) had 10 points and six rebounds in a 69-54 win against St. Augustine’s.

Prep hoops

Adam Roller  made a 3-pointer from near halfcourt at the buzzer on Tuesday and lifted Central Cabarrus to a 67-66 win at East Rowan.

Central had to go the length of the court after a timeout with 2.2 seconds left, but Roller, who came across the court to receive the pass near the right sideline, was able to catch the ball, make one dribble and put up a contested shot that swished.

East had staged a second-half rally to get the lead, after trailing 39-31 at the break.

Roller and Che Jones scored 15 points each for the Vikings (1-0), who are coached by former Catawba men’s basketball coach Jim Baker. Keani Mitchell scored 11. Jaylynn Bennett added 10.

Brandon Jefferson scored a career-high 18 to lead East Rowan (0-2). Elton Hooper scored 13, while Gabe Hinceman and Bryson Spinkle had 11 each.

Central plays Friday (Nov.24) vs. Charlotte Country Day in a Thanksgiving tournament at North Meck.

East returns to action at Northwest Cabarrus on Tuesday.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls defeated Summit School, 24-18.  Rachel McCullough scored 16 points, and Sutton Webb had eight.

Sacred Heart’s varsity boys won, 41-34, with Jalon Walker scoring 16, Nick Antosek  nine and Ben Childress seven.

The Sacrd Heart jayvee girls won against Summitt, 17-15.

  Izzy Banish led with nine points. Banish, Mary Church and Angie Landaverde were great on defense.

  Soyer Cornelisonhad 11 points, ands six rebounds.  Nick Loeblein had 11 points andthree steals.  Kaiden Dulkoski had six points and 16 rebounds.  Alex Robinette had five points, and Jake Trainor had three points and four rebounds.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy varsity boys basketball team defeated North Hills, 54-29.   Will Webb led the Jaguars with 12 points, Deuce Walker scored nine. Jaiden Colbert scored seven. Wade Robins and Damian Brandon had six each.
