Area Sports Briefs: Hornets win behind Howard

CHARLOTTE — Dwight Howard had 25 points and 20 rebounds, and Charlotte beat Minnesota.

Howard, acquired in an offseason trade from Atlanta, was 8 for 10 from the field and 9 of 14 at the foul line, where he has struggled all season. He outplayed Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns, who had 18 points and 12 rebounds as Minnesota lost on back-to-back nights.

Frank Kaminsky provided a huge spark off the bench, scoring nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter. He shot 9 of 15 overall, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Turkeys

Eighty Thanksgiving turkeys were distributed in 10 minutes at The Perfect Smoke on Monday by  Donte Minter’s organization: Coast to Coast Life Skills Consultant and Sports Trainer.

Middle schools

Erwin’s girls won against West Rowan, 59-29, in a varsity game.

  Madie Honeycutt and Haley Dalton scored 12 each for the Eagles. Hannaj Isley had nine, Leah Hinceman had eight, and Mary Spry scored six.

West Rowan’s boys won against Erwin, 61-35, in varsity action on Monday.

Camden Stamper led the Bulldogs (2-2) with 15 points.  Noah Loeblein had 13 points. Jason Artis had 13 points. Josh Noble had 6 points. Robert Featherstone, Nigel McManus and Casey Gouge had strong defensive games.

Cameron Padgett scored 10 for the Eagles.

   

Cross country

The 39th Annual Foot Locker Southeast Regional will be held at McAlpine on Saturday.

Men’s basketball

Newberry rallied from 11 down with 2:52 left and beat Lenoir-Rhyne in a SAC game on Monday. James Stepp made two free throws with less than a second left for a 77-75 win.

College football

Sewanee freshman DB Wesley Porter (East Rowan) was Honorable Mention on the  Southern Athletic Association all-conference team. Porter had five interceptions, 51 tackles and 11 pass breakups.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls won against Statesville Christian, 42-19.

Rachel McCullough  scored 26 points. Sutton Webb had 10 points.

Sacred Heart’s varsity boys won against Statesville Christian, 43-12.

Jalon Walker scored 19 points. Nick Antosek had nine, and Easton Morris scored seven.

Sacred Heart’s JV girls lost to Concordia, 20-18.   Izzy Banish led the Dolphins with 12 points.  Ellie Walters was a defensive standout.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys lost to Concordia, 32-23.  Nick Loeblein had eight points and four steals.  Kaiden Dulkoski had sixpoints, and 11 rebounds.  Soyer Cornelison had five points and six rebounds.

Jayvee girls

Hickory Ridge topped Carson, 56-36.   Leah Barringer had 18 points for the Bulls, and Asia Lampe scored 13. Tate Barger scored 17 for the Cougars. Kary Hales scored nine.
