Church Women United state meeting

Church Women United of North Carolina held the State Assembly and Leaders’ Council at Milford Hills United Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Welcome was given by State President Emily Springer and Rev. Kelly Shrader, associate pastor of the host church. The theme for the meeting was “Fanning the Flames.” Elder Crystal Rook of Exodus United Baptist Church in Winston Salem was the keynote speaker. Emily Sprague, vice president, introduced the panel participants who discussed the Quadrennial Priorities of Human Rights, Hunger and Poverty, Health and Wellness, Diversity and Inclusiveness.

Panel members were Rev. Dr. Tom Tate, Charlotte-Mecklenburg board of education member since 2005; Norma Marti, Minority Outreach Program Consultant, working with children and youth through the NC Department of Human Services; Dr. Willie Mae Abel, assistant professor of nursing at UNCC; Elder Crystal Rook, activist, consultant, community organizer, pastor.

After lunch, participants attended leader development classes led by state officers. The assembly closed with a business meeting.
