Area Sports Briefs: Career game for Cagle; conference honors for Weeks, O’Brien

Sophomore Jayln Cagle (A.L. Brown) exploded for 179 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries for Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
Cagle also had two receptions for 27 yards in a 33-17 loss to Liberty.
Gardner-Webb fell to 1-7.

Elon freshman receiver Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) was honored as CAA Rookie of the Week for his 11 receptions and 205 receiving yards in Saturday’s win against Villanova.
The 205 receiving yards were the seventh-most in school history. He joined Terrell Hudgins and Aaron Mellette in the program’s 200-yard club.
Weeks leads the Phoenix with 40 receptions and 499 receiving yards. He has scored two touchdowns and is averaging 12.5 yards per catch.

Catawba moved up to No. 6 in the region poll after winning at Limestone and will be home on Saturday afternoon against Newberry at 1:30 p.m.
Undefeated Wingate is still on top of the poll.
CIAA teams are third (Virginia State), fifth (Bowie State) and ninth (Virginia Union). Carson-Newman is 10th.
West Alabama is No. 2.
Seven teams from the region will make the playoffs.

Catawba QB Patrick O’Brien was named SAC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 403 yards and four TDs in the 45-28 win at Limestone.
He had no interceptions and a QB efficiency rating of 202.9.
Wingate linebacker Zack Singleton is the Defensive Player of the Week. Bulldog return man BJ Muckelvene is the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Sewanee freshman Wesley Portre (East Rowan) made his fifth interception of the season in a loss on Saturday.
Porter also had five tackles and a pass breakup.

D.J. Alexander (Salisbury) has been a force in recent games for N.C. Wesleyan and had 3.5 tackles for loss in a win on Saturday.

Kacey Otto (West Rowan) returned from a severe ankle sprain and passed for 99 yards and rushed for 60 for St. Andrews on Saturday. Otto’s day included a 45-yard scoring run.

Appalachian State senior linebacker Eric Boggs was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. He had 15 tackles against UMass on Saturday. He had an interception, a sack and a forced fumble.

In the BOXTOROW HBCU media poll, the top five teams — North Carolina A&T, Grambling, Virginia State, N.C. Central and Bowie State — did not change this week.
College tennis
N.C. State’s Michael Ogden (Salisbury) and Alexis Galarneau received an at-large bid to play doubles in the ITA National Fall Championships on Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, California.
Coll. cross country
Charlotte’s Zachary Marchinko (Carson) finished sixth in the Conference USA Meet and helped the 49ers finish scond.
Marchinko crossed the line in 24:28.7. Alex Cornwell (Hickory Ridge) was six seconds behind Marchinko.
Charlotte will compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Va., on Friday, Nov. 10.

Rebecca Parker (West Rowan) was 29th in the Sun Belt Cross Country Championships and helped Georgia Southern finish ninth.
Parker ran 18:40 in the 5K event to lead the Eagles.
Coll. basketball
Tickets for the 2018 CIAA Tournament are on sale.
The annual tournament will take place for the 13th consecutive year in Charlotte, with the first two days at Bojangles Coliseum and the final three days at the Spectrum Center in uptown Charlotte from Feb. 27-March 3.

Five-star recruit Joey Baker verbally committed to Duke Sunday night.
Baker, a 6-7, 190-pound small forward who plays for Trinity Christian School in Fayetteville, is the No. 20 overall recruit in the Class of 2019, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.

Two South Atlantic Conference teams are in the Basketball Times preseason top 20. Queens is ranked second, while Lincoln Memorial is sixth.
Queens’ Jalin Alexander, Carson-Newman’s Charles Clark and Lincoln Memorial’s Dorian Pinson are preseason All-Americans.

Catawba’s men have an unusual early schedule and won’t be at home until Dec. 9. They’ll play at Queens and at Lincoln Memorial in the early going.

Senior Lynsey Corriher (South Rowan) has had her best college season and helped Averett go 30-3 in the regular season.
Averett is undefeated at home and in the conference and will play at home in the USA South tourney tonight.

Catawba’s seventh-seeded women play at No. 2 seed Wingate at 5 p.m. today in the first round of the SAC tournament.
Wingate is looking to advance to the SAC Tournament championship match for the eighth consecutive season.

College rowing
Senior Phil Simons (Salisbury) and UNC’s club rowing team broke the course record and won the gold medal in men’s fours at the 51st Head of the Charles in Boston.
Rowing is the oldest intercollegiate sport in the United States.

Chris Smith (West Rowan) made three tackles in Cincinatti’s 24-23 win against Indianapolis.

The Sherrill brothers (West Rowan) are still doing well in Europe.
Keshun is averaging 18.8 points and 4.2 assists after four games in the Netherlands.
K.J. is averaging 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds after eight games in Germany.
Prep football
Pre-sale tickets at A.L. Brown for the Bell game with Concord start on Wednesday.
Tickets will be sold from 11:30 until 1:30 at Bullock Gym on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The game is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Memorial Stadium in Kannapolis.
The game is part of the Great American Rivalry Series.
Prep boys soccer
Salisbury is seeded 20th in the 2A state playoffs.
Pairings were released on Monday.
The Hornets, who finished very strong after a rocky start, will play at 13th-seeded Belmont South Point (16-4-1) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
South Point is a newcomer to 2A after many years in the 3A ranks.
If the Hornets (13-6-2) can advance, they’ll play a second-round match on Saturday against the Shelby-Ashe County winner. Shelby (19-2) is seeded fourth, while Ashe (14-9) is seeded 29th.
Six Central Carolina Conference teams are in the 32-team 2A West bracket. The top seed is Newton-Conover, which gets started against No. 32 North Davidson.

In 3A, A.L. Brown is seeded 21st and plays at No. 12 Watauga in the first round.
Statesville is the highest-seeded North Piedmont Conference team. The Greyhounds are No. 3 and hosts No. 30 Kings Mountain in the first round.
Five of the six South Piedmont Conference teams made the playoffs. Cox Mill is the No. 4 seed and starts off against No. 29 North Iredell.
Prep cross country
State championships are set for Saturday at Kernersville’s Ivey Redmond Sports Complex.
Leah Cressler, Sarah Flack, Mary Kaufmann, Freya Obermueller, Anna Patel, Ellen Simons and Anna Grace Woolly will compete for Salisbury’s girls, the county’s only qualifying team.
Individuals qualified from East Rowan (Sean Incardona), South Rowan (Madison Lowery, Noah Julian), West Rowan (Thomas Waldo, Megyn Spicer) and Carson (Taylor Conrad, Taylor Wiggins).
A.L. Brown’s Brandon Hernandez qualified, along with Davie County’s Clay Summers and Emerson Frantz.
Both Gray Stone teams qualified for the 1A meet.
