Closing reception & spoken word gallery event
As the exhibit “Hello my name is…” by Doug Lail comes to a close, Center for Faith & the Arts hosts an evening of spoken word from the Guerilla Poets, plus music and an open mic on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 6-9 p.m.

Deadline Friday for ‘The Seasons of Hurley Park’ art
The deadline for entries is Oct. 20 to submit art for “The Seasons of Hurley Park: 30 Years.”
Waterworks Visual Arts Center in partnership with The Hurley Park Foundation will present a special juried group exhibition in celebration of the park’s pearl anniversary. Artists from all over North Carolina are invited to apply. There is no fee to enter. Exhibition dates are Feb. 10-May 19, 2018. All 2- and 3-D media are accepted, including audio and video installation and sculpture. Participants must reside in North Carolina and work must be inspired by Hurley Park. Possible topics include: the park’s rich history, ecology, natural beauty, and/or a memory or personal connection to the park.

Tonight: A ‘Southern Fried Funeral’ at Old Courthouse Theatre
CONCORD — “Southern Fried Funeral” by Osborne and Eppler premiers tonight a the Old Courthouse Theatre.
Dewey Frye is dead and the rest of his family is left to pick up the pieces — that is if they don’t kill each other first. Not only does matriarch Dorothy have to contend with sudden widowhood, but she’s also faced with church-committee harpy Ozella Meeks sticking her nose in the family business, Dewey’s snake-in-the-grass brother making a grab for her house, and two grown daughters reliving their childhood rivalry. Funerals bring out the worst, the best, and the funniest in people, and the Fryes are no exception. A big-hearted comedy about family —Southern-style.
Evening performance dates are Oct. 19, 20, 21, 27, 28, Nov. 3, 4 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees are Oct. 22, 29 an d Nov. 5 at 2:30 p.m.

Toss for Tots, a fundraiser sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse Rowan (Terri Hess House) features friendly corn hole competition and other fun games, raffles for Panthers Package — including box seats — food catered by the Smoke Pit, music by LiveHouse, and a selection of beer and wine plus the signature drink of the night.
