Legion baseball

Randolph County Legion coach Ronnie Pugh was outspoken in his comments about new  rules which will make the Legion game a lot more like high school baseball.

The biggest change is a move to seven-inning games for state, regional and national tournaments.

“Your coaching approach, the way you build your team, it’s just totally different,”   Pugh told the Asheboro Courier Tribune. “Going to seven innings is an easy way for people who are complaining who are not willing to go out and develop a team. Everything we did in our program was to mimic a college approach with the goal of giving our kids the chance to play in college. Instead of making   Legion programs go out and work hard to develop a program,  Legion officials  are taking the easy way out. Instead of continuing to do things to separate ourselves from other programs, they are converting everything to high school.  The next step would be to give everyone a trophy and then after that we can cancel the season and have everyone just come by and pick up their trophy.”

Nine of the 10 largest states as far as American Legion baseball participation voted for the innings change. North Carolina voted against it.
