Reception at Pottery 101

Pottery 101 will host a reception for Dustin Fowler and Kelsey Sorensen on Friday, Oct. 13, from 6-9 p.m. Both potters are recent additions to the gallery.

Fowler currently resides in Asheville but was raised in Rowan County. He specializes in traditional wood fired pottery, which he feels connects him to his deep North Carolina roots. Sorensen comes from Iowa and currently resides and has a studio in Lexington. Her functional pottery is inspired by botanical drawings and is decorated in palette of springtime colors.

Hurley Park’s annual Lecture and Plant Giveaway 

Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Salisbury-Rowan Utilities office, 1 Water St., guest speaker Margo MacIntyre will speak on “Preserving Historic Coker Arboretum.” A plant giveaway will follow the lecture.  Voices from the Titanic: ‘The watch that ends the night’

Allan Wolf, author, poet, performer and educator who lives in Asheville, is the guest of the The English Speaking Union Salisbury Branch at the October dinner meeting to be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Country Club of Salisbury. Wolf will be performing excerpts from his book “The Watch that Ends the Night: Voices from the Titanic” which was awarded the presitgious Claudia Lewis Award for Poetry. He is also a member of The Dead Poets, a musical trio who transform classic poetry into toe-tapping tunes and was an active organizer in the early days of the poetry slam competitions.

South Rowan Regional hosts Fall Festival & Open House Saturday

CHINA GROVE— Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at RPL 920 Kimball Road., beside the China Grove YMCA. The day features a variety of programs and activities, and all are free and open to the public.

Special children’s storytime at 10 a.m.

Teen Read-In from 10 a.m. until Noon. Teens ages 11 to 18.

At 10:30 a.m., librarian Paul Birkhead leads a Photowalk. Bring a camera (cell phone is fine) and be prepared to walk the grounds.

From 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Salisbury Symphony Orchestra will host its Musical Petting Zoo in the South Meeting Room.

“Cinema on the Porch,” begins at 11 a.m., showing seasonal films on the covered porch. Popcorn and lemonade will be served.

A scavenger hunt that leads participants throughout the library will be underway during the festival.

From 10 – 11 a.m., David Lamanno will perform blues and folk music featuring guitar, harmonica, and claw-hammer banjo. At noon, guitarist and vocalist Kristen Trahan will perform.

Other outdoors activities include face painting, games, and an appearance by the China Grove Fire Department and one of its trucks.

Honey Magpie coming to Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS — Honey Magpie, a Carrboro-based indie folk band, will be playing at the Wired Coffee Espress, 459 N. Cannon Blvd., next Thursdayto promote the recent release of their debut album Honey Magpie.

This free performance begins at 7:30 p.m. The three female vocalists accompany themselves on violin, guitar, and cello. They are backed by their fourth band member on drums.

Honey Magpie’s indie folk sound has been compared to the Wailin’ Jennys and First Aid Kit. The band also covers popular classics by artists such as Carole King and Bob Dylan. Learn more at www.honeymagpie.com

Catawba presents free staged reading of original play

A staged reading of “Sister of the Stars” will be presented by Catawba College Theatre Arts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14-15 in the Florence-Busby-Corriher Theatre on campus. Written by Dr. Bradley Stephenson and directed by Dr. Beth Homan, both professors in Catawba’s Theatre Arts Department, “Sister of the Stars” tells the story of Cecilia Payne Gaposchkin and her attempts to become the first woman to earn her Ph.D. in astrophysics at Harvard College. Visit www.catawba.edu to learn more.

Hickory Oktoberfest

Hickory — Three days of music, food and fun at Hickory’s 32nd annual Oktoberfest, held in Downtown Hickory on Oct. 13-15. The festival features carnival rides, amusement games, music, demonstrations, vendors and food to the Square.

Friday: Music by Nantucket, the Foothills Oompah Band and Blues man John Nemeth.

Saturday: McKinney Gap and On the Border, The Ultimate Eagles Tribute.

Sunday: Reggie Rocc, then Devotion and Friends.
