The State Fair runs Oct. 12-22 in Raleigh, bringing thousands of visitors and a basketful of fried and unsual food.

Where to begin?

Local foods are the best, right? You’ll be able to snack on a Cheerwine cake with honey-infused frosting, topped with chocolate shavings, thanks to Old North State Kitchen.

If that’s not enough, you can get a Cheerwine funnel came from Beaver Concessions, notable for its pink color.

Would you like a deep fried pumpkin pie with cinnamon vanilla ice cream? Sounds good, actually.

For something salty, try deep fried crab cake cheese curds from the Cheese Curd Shack. It’s white chedar cheese curds cooked with snow crab and shrimp.

Woody’s Grill has deep fried bacon and cheese collard bites.

Roasted corn has become a festival standard, and at the State Fair, you can get Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Roasted Corn from Douglas Farms.

Old North State Kitchen has also created Old North State Chicken, roasted chicken breast with a country ham and pimiento cheese cream sauce.

If you’re already hungry for a Thanksgiving meal, Woody’s Grill ups their game with Thanksgiving eggrolls, stuffed with turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberries.

You want more fried pies? Let’s see, there’s deep fried chocolate pie with vanilla ice cream. Or deep fried apple pie with cinnamon vanilla ice cream and pure apple syrup.

Go tropical with deep fried key lime pie bites or indulge in the strawberry and Nutella hand pie with rye crust from LaFarm Bakery. It’s a flakey rye chocolate pastry crust, filled, then topped with chocolate ganache. Go ahead. You’ll burn off the calories walking around.

Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples will offer apples covered in cherry pecan streudel, coconut macadamia nut cream pie and chocolate marshmellow fluff.

You’ll find a variety of seafood, there, too, like bacon wrapped scallops and fried clam chowder. Wonder if they fry the clams or the chowder?

Chicken will be well represented, with B.A.D. Chix, a combination of eggs, bacon, cheese and a syrup drizzle layered on a crispy chicken strip, nestled in a hotcake.

For the first time, fair-goers can sample poutine, a signature dish of Quebec, Canada, comprised of French fries topped with cheese curds and brown gravy.
