Area Sports Briefs: Steelers’ Hargrave makes 10 tackles

Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) made a team-high 10 tackles, with four solo stops, for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, extraordinary production for a nose tackle.
Pittsburgh lost to Jacksonville, 30-9, although the Steelers’ defense generally played well. Pittsburgh lost mostly because of five interceptions, two that were returned for TDs by the Jaguars.
Hargrave totaled six tackles in Pittsburgh’s first four games.
College football
Elon’s Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) had six catches for 66 yards in Elon’s win against William & Mary on Saturday.

Myquon Stout (Carson) made two tackles for Appalachian State in Saturday’s homecoming win against New Mexico State.

Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown) had eight carries for 42 yards for Army in Saturday’s romp against Rice.

West Rowan senior Caleb Mauldin took visits to Lincoln Memorial (official) and VMI (unofficial) over the weekend.

The Wendy’s Invitational at McAlpine Park is always one of the top regional cross country events.
Rowan runners did very well in a strong field. South Rowan runners competed in the 3A races for boys and girls.
South Rowan’s Madison Lowery ran 20:04 and finished ninth.
South’s Madison Henry (20:56) and Madiso McGuire (21:52) also were strong, and the Raiders finished 10th in the team scoring.
Taylor Conrad ran 20:39 to lead Carson runners.
Megyn Spicer, a freshman, led West Rowan runners in 21:56.
Grace Faller’s 23:50 clocking was the best for East Rowan.
In the boys race, A.L. Brown’s Brandon Hernandez took third place with a time of 15:55.
Carson had the best team score for the Rowan boys entries and finished 14th.
Zac Barbee ran 18:04 to lead the Cougars.
Thomas Waldo’s 17:20 led West Rowan. He edged East Rowan’s Sean Incardona, the county champion. Incardona ran 17:22. Freshman Noah Julian paced South Rowan with a 17:24 clocking.
Men’s cross country
Twins Jonathan Martin and Matthew Martin (Carson) ran personal bests and helped UNC Pembroke win the college division at the Florida State Invitational on Friday morning.
Prep volleyball
Statesville is strong for a team that has won only one NPC game, and Carson had a tough time with the Greyhounds before winning, 3-1, in its most recent home game.
Mallory Weast had 26 kills and 14 digs. Grace Thomas had 36 assists. Kary Hales had 31 digs. Lindsay Elmore had 13 kills and seven digs.

Ranked 11th in the state, Carson won Saturday at Reagan, the first loss of the season for the fourth-ranked Raiders. Carson won 25-20, 25-23 and 25-19. Weast had 14 kills and 10 digs. Hales had 24 digs. Thomas had 28 assists. Elmore had 12 kills. Jaden Vaughn had seven digs and seven kills. Katie Blackwell had nine digs, four kills and three aces.
Carson also won easily against Page 25-11, 25-15, 25-11 in the tri-match at Reagan. Elmore had 20 kills. Thomas had 27 assists. Weast had 10 digs and six kills. Hales had 12 digs. Blackwell had five aces and 12 digs.

In Saturday’s Dig Pink Jamboree at West Rowan, West’s Cassidy Hewitt and Kaylin Dowling had six kills each in a sweep against North Rowan. Lindsey VonCanon had seven aces.
West also swept Salisbury on Saturday. Tori Hester had 12 kills for the Falcons, while Emma Gusler and Maddison Myers had six each. Dowling had five aces. Ava Link had 10 digs, while Hannah Pratt had eight. Link had 26 assists.
West (16-4, 5-3) hosts Carson (17-3, 6-2) on Tuesday night at approximately 6 p.m.

Salisbury swept North Rowan in Saturday’s Dig Pink Jamboree.
Prep tennis
Conference tournaments will be used this week as qualifiers for the individual regionals.
Players can compete in singles or doubles, but not both.
Lexington is hosting the Central Carolina Conference event, with Salisbury players expected to be strong.
West Rowan is hosting the North Piedmont Conference event. West, Carson and East Rowan have potential regional qualifiers.

The dual team state playoffs are set to start on Oct. 18. Salisbury and Carson have qualified.
Prep girls golf
The South Piedmont Conference Tournament is set for today at Red Bridge Golf Club in Locust.
Rowan golfers will be off until regional play starts.
East Rowan’s girls, the North Piedmont Conference and Rowan champs, will be competing at Greensboro National Golf Club on Oct. 16.
Local golf
Ralph Carver, of Concord, made a hole-in-one Friday at McCanless.
He aced the 177-yard No. 6 hole with a 5-wood.Carver has been playing 50 years. The hole-in-one was the first of his career. His wife, Pam, witnessed the feat and was credited with inspiring the perfect shot.

College soccer
Barton’s Megan Bolick made three saves, including a PK, and helped the Bulldogs shut out Mount Olive.

Catawba (5-5, 3-2 SAC) got nine saves from Shelby Thompson.

Evan Jeckells stopped five shots for Catawba (1-7-1, 1-3-1 SAC), including an early penalty kick, but the Catawba men also lost to Carson-Newman, 3-0, on Saturday.
Racing
Kannapolis native and current playoff contender Daniel Hemric will return to Richard Childress Racing for the 2018 season to again compete for the NASCAR XFINITY Series championship in the No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro.
Catawba XC
Catawba’s Hannah Mercer (18:48) was the top Division II runner in the women’s 5k at the Hagan Stone Classic Cross Country Meet on Saturday.
Her win helped the Catawba Indians to the team title. Catawba put six runners in the top 10.
Catawba’s men were third among four Division II teams. Former Northwest Cabarrus standout Ethan Bemis led Catawba’s men with a seventh-place finish in the 8k with a time of 26:54.
Next for Catawba will be the SAC Championships on Oct. 21 in Newton, N.C.
College volleyball
Catawba lost a five-set match to Newberry in Goodman Gym on Saturday.
Allie Grubb and Rachel Stanford led the Indians in kills with 15 each. Stanford and Morgan Hester (Carson) each handed out 26 assists and made 13 digs. Allison Benton led the defense with 20 digs.

In the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 72-77-72 — 221 and tied for 53rd. Gardner-Webb’s Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) shot 72-76-71 — 219 and tied for 47th.
UNC won the event.
