South Rowan High School Class of 1962

CHINA GROVE — The South Rowan High School Class of 1962 held its 55th anniversary reunion on Sept. 23 at the Warrior Golf Club. Joy Evans Earnhardt, Pam Turner Martin, Brenda Walters Welch and Kay Graham Musselwhite registered the classmates upon their arrival.

After the social hour, Brenda Walters Welch welcomed the class. Wayne Spears gave the invocation, followed by dinner.

A memorial tribute was given by Modena McCreary Weaver and Dickey Menius to the 49 deceased classmates: Jimmy Baker, Sandra Bame Menius, Bill Bernhardt, Arthur Broadway, Brenda Chapman Earnhardt, Annie Coe, Brenda Cook, Sherry W. Critz, Linda Daugherty Garmon, David Deal, T. C. Dunlap, Aloma Fisher Nogueira, Carolyn A. A business meeting was conducted by Patsy Hudson Parnell. Greetings and responses from classmates unable to attend were read by Linda Wright Clodfelter and Don Bland. Helen Stirewalt Correll led the discussion on the next reunion and the class elected to have a mini-reunion in 2018 and a regular reunion in 2019.

The class shared fond memories and tall tales of bygone days and an enjoyable evening was shared by all.

Spencer High School class of 1957

The Spencer High School  Class of 1957 met on Sept. 23 at the Country Club of Salisbury for its 60th class reunion. Earl Lester, class president, welcomed the group and Tim Benton had a time of remembrance for the deceased classmates. Joyce Poole gave a report on the Endowed Scholarship Fund at Catawba College established by the class. She also read a letter of thanks from the current recipient.

Attending from Salisbury were: Linda Noles Pitman, Robert Gobble, Sue Sherlin Chambers and Ray Chambers. Out of town attendees were: Charles Waddell (Judy), Welcome; Beverly  Brannock Sagneri, Maryland; Larry Jacobs (Faye), Matthews; Jane Buie Truesdel, Charlotte; Joyce Smith Poole, Linwood; Tim Benton, Ohio; Earnest Cain (Tracy), Georgia; Earl Lester (Joanne), Cooleemee; and special guest Bettie Poteat, Mocksville.

 

Community Teamwork

One of the principals of the American Legion as well as the American Red Cross is “Service to the Community.” On  Sept. 17, the Red cross and Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 teamed up for just that purpose. The main hall of Post 342 was transformed into a blood donation site. Donations from members and the public totalled more than 25 pints. The Red Cross reminds us that there is still a great need for blood to help the flood victims in Florida and Texas, as currewnt supplies are not sufficient to meet the demand.

Grace Lutheran Men In Mission’s 9th annual fish fry fundraiser

On the night of his 28th birthday in January 2017, Felix Bautista suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. After spending more than two months in the hospital he is currently back at home continuing his physical, occupational, and speech therapies. Felix and his wife Holly have a 1-year old daughter named Bailey and are members of First Baptist in Mooresville.

At the fundraiser on Oct. 14 starting at 4 p.m., there will be a live deejay, basket raffles and 1/2 and 1/2 raffle. Bring your own lawn chair. Parking shuttle service is available. Dine-in or carry out. Raffles will be drawn the same evening.

Private and public health issues

AAUW Lecture Series, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 with Krista Whitesel Woolly, executive director of the Community Care Clinic of Rowan County, speaking on “Health Issues – Private and Public Sectors.”

Woolly served on the board of directors from 2010-2012 prior to becoming the executive director in May of 2012. Mrs. Woolly attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and received a BA in Liberal Arts/Human Services and a MS in Rehabilitation Counseling. Before moving to Salisbury in 2009, she was employed by Valley Health in Winchester, Va. as director of outpatient rehabilitation services. Currently, she serves on the boards of the JF Hurley YMCA, GRACES (a Guatemalan K-12 school), and on the executive team for Healthy Rowan.

Hurley Park news

Hurley Park’s annual Lecture and Plant Giveaway — Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Salisbury-Rowan Utilities office, 1 Water St. Margo MacIntyre will be the guest speaker and will present a lecture titled “Preserving Historic Coker Arboretum.” A plant giveaway will follow the lecture.

Brass on the Grass — Continuing the park’s 30th anniversary celebration, there will be a concert in the park on Sunday, Oct. 22. The concert will be a Brass Quintet featuring members of the Salisbury Symphony, 2pm at Haden’s Gazebo at the corner of Annandale Avenue &and North Craige Street. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.

Concert by Elisabeth Von Trapp

Elisabeth Von Trapp will present a concert at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. Admission is free. An offering will be taken during the performance (suggested donation: $10) and part of the proceeds will go to support St. Luke’s new Hospitality Room for first responders. Elisabeth’s recordings and books about the Von Trapp family will be available for purchase following the concert.

Elisabeth is the granddaughter of Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired “The Sound of Music.” Singing professionally since childhood, Elisabeth has enthralled audiences from European cathedrals to Washington D.C.’s National Cathedral, the Kennedy Center and hundreds of performance halls and churches across the United States.
