SALISBURY — A Salisbury woman faces misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after she got into an argument with her roommate and threw the woman’s dog against a wall.

The dog did not appear to have serious injuries.

The Salisbury Police Department charged Stephanie Amber Carpenter, 31, of the 900 block of Lincolnton Road, with misdemeanor simple assault and misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Officials said the altercation happened about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Lincolnton Road home. A report said police officers arrived to see two women standing outside between two vehicles. They spoke to Sarah Mayberry, who was visibly upset.

The two women had argued, and Carpenter assaulted Mayberry and her 3-year-old Bichon Frise/Chihuahua mix dog, police said.

A report said Carpenter choked the dog and threw it across the room against a wall. The dog had no visible injuries, but the officer noted that the dog growled when Carpenter was present.

A third roommate said he had just gotten home and witnessed the two women arguing. He also said he saw Carpenter abuse the dog.

Carpenter was issued no bond and was released from the Rowan County Detention Center.
