SPENCER — The race for seats on the Spencer Board of Aldermen is taking off, with all of the board’s seven incumbents seeking re-election. Two challengers also have filed.

Among those hoping for new terms is Alderman Kevin Jones. Jones, 37, has served three terms on the board, but he’s eager for a fourth.

“I mean, I’ve enjoyed it,” he said.

Jones said he thinks that in the past two years, the board really has begun to see some accomplishments. According to Jones, several new businesses have opened in Spencer, the town has at last opened the Stanback Forest and work is finally under way to clean up stormwater drains along Fourth Street.

If re-elected, Jones said he’d like to continue to develop Spencer’s commercial areas.

“Which I think will help lead to revitalization in some of the neighborhoods,” he said.

The two go hand in hand, he said.

Alderman was the first elected office Jones ever held.

Originally from West Rowan, Jones now lives in Spencer with his wife of 15 years, Cybil, and their four children. The couple are also foster parents.

Jones is an alumnus of Elon University, where he earned a degree in chemistry. He owns a few local Subway franchises and works part time at Life Church.

Jones said he is looking forward to the opportunity to serve his community for another two years.
