Area Sports Briefs: SR volleyball wins vs. Green Dragons

South Rowan’s volleyball team won against West Davidson on Thursday, 25-11, 25-21 and 25-18.

It was the biggest win of the season for the Raiders (13-6, 11-3 CCC).

West Davidson is second in the league at 12-2, while Ledford is 13-1.

Janiya Downs had 16 kills. Kira Rymer had 18 kills, 20 digs and four aces. Jenna Strickland had 24 digs. Michaela Hallman had 28 assists.

South’s jayvees  (10-8, 8-5) lost, 2-1, to the Green Dragons.

Sarai Benitez had 15 digs. Kendall Walter had seven kills. Anna Rymer had nine digs, five kills and  seven assists.

West Rowan (13-3, 4-2 NPC) swept East Rowan, 25-11, 25-14 and 25-14 on Thursday. West moved into a tie for second with Carson. The Cougars lost to North Iredell.

Salisbury lost to Oak Grove, 3-0, on Thursday.

Jayvee football

Gavin Kuld was 10-for-15 passing for 148 yards as  North Rowan romped against South Stanly, 54-0.

Kuld threw two touchdown passes and also ran for a score. Javon Smith had two TD receptions. Khoreem Miller and Caelan Stinson accounted for two TDs each.

Bryan Lawson led the North defense.

South Rowan played Oak Grove and lost, 21-6, on Thursday.  Lexington beat Ledford, 40-21, while North Davidson romped vs. West Davidson, 44-10.

Prep tennis

Salisbury cruised against East Davidson, 9-0,  for its 171st straight win in the Central Carolina Conference.

West Rowan won against East Rowan, 6-2, in North Piedmont Conference tennis on Thursday in Mount Ulla.

(1) Payton Holt, (4) Skylar Jahnke, (5) Mira White, and (6) Kelsie Crider won singles matches for the Falcons (6-4, 5-3 NPC).

East’s singles wins came  from (2) Lauren Weisensel and (4) Kristen Brady.  West’s winning doubles teams were Holt/Abby Johnson and Jahnke/White.    Wiesensel’s win in No. 2  singles  against Madison Smith lasted 2 1/2 hours, so the teams didn’t play the other doubles match.

West Rowan will play  at South Iredell on Tuesday, while East visits Carson.

(1) Emily Sloop, (3) Siera Fesperman, (4) Jadyn Kirkpatrick and (5) Maci Cooper won singles matches for Carson in Thursday’s 6-3 NPC victory against North Iredell. The doubles teams of Gabi Jolly/Fesperman and  Sloop/Kirkpatrick were winners.

Mid. school tennis

Erwin Middle defeated Knox Middle, 5-4, in a tennis match at the Knox courts on Thursday.

Erwin’s singles winners were Riley Isley, Rebecca Reilly and Summer Null.

Reilly/Rebecca Whisnant and Joanna Thompson/Null won in doubles.

  Singles winners for Knox were Abby Campion, Autumn Walser and Mary Morgan.  Sophie Chmiel/Campion won in doubles.

Knox will host Mooresville on Tuesday.

Prep soccer

Salisbury battled the Thomasville Bulldogs to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

Jack Fisher and Bryan Garcia-Cortez scored for the Hornets (6-5-2 overall,5-4-1 in the CCC). Eriq Argrett had an assist.

The result means that Thomasville and Salisbury remain tied for fourth place in the CCC.

Salisbury got excellent play from Garcia-Cortez, Will Austin and Danny Tinajero.

Salisbury again played without All State center back Pedro Cruz and midfielder Hugo Trujillo.

Next up for the Hornets are two games at Ludwig Stadium. Salisbury looks to reverse an earlier loss against West Davidson on Monday night at  6 p.m.  and plays a JV-varsity doubleheader against Lexington at 5:30 and 7 on Wednesday.

East Rowan tied West Stanly, 2-2, on Thursday.

Landon Ketchie and Alex Kalogermitros scored goals for the Hornets.   Assists were by William Garland and Kalogermitros.

David Burleyson made eight saves for East.

Prep golf

Carmen Fraley (44) Grace Howell (45) and Hailey Fesperman (48) led East Rowan to an NPC win at Twin Oaks. Carson, led by Sophia Brown’s 49, took second place.

At Lexington Golf Club, Olivia Sharpe shot 33 and led West Davidson to an other CCC victory.

South  Rowan was seventh. Salisbury finished eighth.
