Prep Briefs: Salisbury soccer stays on roll; Carson, SHS tennis still perfect in league play

Salisbury’s boys soccer team overcame a sluggish start to win at East Davidson, 4-1, in Central Carolina Conference action on Thursday.

Tony Figueroa scored twice to pace the Hornets.

Luke Holland connected on a set piece from Jack Fisher, and Eriq Argrett scored his first career varsity goal .

Juan Salazar and Dennis Anaya provided assists for the Hornets.

Salisbury (5-5-1, 4-4) got solid play from Daniel Tinajero, Will Austin and Melvin Bonilla.

Salisbury hosts South Rowan in a JV-varsity doubleheader on Monday  at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Prep tennis

Carson’s girls stayed undefeated in the North Piedmont Conference with a 6-3 home win against West Rowan on Thursday.

(1) Payton Holt and (4)Skylar Jahnke won for the Falcons in singles. Holt teamed with Abby Johnson for a doubles win.

Carson got singles wins from (2) Gabi Jolly, (3) Siera Fesperman, (5) Maci Cooper and (6) Quinnlan Watson.

Carson doubles winners were Fesperman-Jolly and  Cooper/Watson.

Salisbury defeated  West Davidson on Thursday, 9-0, to stay perfect in the Central Carolina Conference.

Maria Capito, Julia Honeycutt, Emma Nianouris, Lillian Rusher, Meredith Burton and Bethanie Stauffer won in singles for the Hornets.  Capito/Nianouris, Stauffer/Burton and Rachel Seifert/ Skye. Mowery  swept doubles.

Salisbury hosts Oak Grove on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Prep volleyball

South Rowan lost to Ledford, 18-25, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-17 in Central Carolina Conference volleyball on Thursday.

Ledford stayed tied for first with West Davidson.

For South, Jenna Strickland had 18 digs; Kira Rymer had 10 digs and 12 kills; Janiya Downs had 14 kills, and Michaela Hallman had 21 assists.

South’s jayvees lost, 2-0.

Sarai Benitez had nine digs;  Anna Rymer had 20 assists and six kills, and Kendall Walter had nine kills.

East Rowan lost to Statesville, 23-25, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-9 in NPC action on Thursday.

Baleigh Hill had 21 digs, and Leah Wyrick had seven kills and two aces.

East’s jayvees were swept by Statesville. Emma Collins had four kills and Hannah Larson had three kills.

North Iredell stayed alone in first place in the NPC by sweeping South Iredell.

Sincere Houston scored on a 35-yard run for Salisbury in Thursday’s 22-6 loss  to Lexington.

Kevin Hayes led Salisbury’s defense.

Cameron “CP” Pyle scored on a short run to give Carson an early lead, but the Cougars were shut out after that and lost to Central Cabarrus, 20-6, on Thursday.

Michael Altmann intercepted a pass for the Cougars. Mikhail Gomez and Jadon Vernon had fumble recoveries.

A.L. Brown rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead and beat Davie County, 47-20.

Nate Hampton passed for 116 yards for Davie. Joe Johnson had two rushing TDs, and Kristian Lyons had one.

North Rowan’s game at North Moore was postponed on Thursday afternoon  by “weather issues” and will be played late in the season.

Cooper Wright caught a TD pass from Logan Forbis in East’s 47-14 loss to Northwest Cabarrus.

South Rowan fell to North Davidson, 59-6.

Concord’s jayvees made a goal-line stand and edged West Rowan.

Prep golf

In CCC golf, an 18-hole event hosted by Salisbury on Thursday, West Davidson won with a 128 total.

Ledford was second at 151. South Rowan shot 179 for eighth place, while Salisbury was 10th at 209.

West Davidson was led by medalist Olivia Sharpe. She shot 36.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s boys cross country team won its first cross country meet of the season at Sacred Heart on Wednesday.

Salisbury Academy’s Christopher Portillo traversed the difficult, two-mile course to win the meet in a time of 13:02.

Also scoring for the Jaguars were Ethan Ott (5th, 14:00), Jacob Mills (6th, 14:01)  and Wyatt Goodnight (9th, 14:43.

The Salisbury Academy girls also competed in the meet. They were paced by Kari Downs (7th,  18:27) and Miles Abramson (11th, 19:41).

Salisbury Academy’s girls tennis won against Knox,6-3, on Wednesday.

Mid. school tennis

  Knox defeated Mooresville on Thursday, 7-2.

Singles winners for Knox were Sophie Chmiel, Abby Campion, Autumn Walser and Mary Morgan.

Doubles winners were Chmiel/Campion, Walser/Sage Huffman and   Morgan /Jaleiah Gibson.

Knox is at West Rowan on Tuesday.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart’s varsity volleyball team lost to Ellis Middle, 25-6 and 25-15.

Grace Blackwell was the top server, Sophia Malloy had several assists and Gianna Patella was the top hitter and defensive player.

Sacred Heart won against Our Lady of Grace, 21-25, 26-24 and 25-22.

  Malloy served for 15 points. Leading the defense  were Ella Trainor,  Blackwell, Angelina Pierson and Mabel Harrison.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee volleyball team lost 20-12 and 20-17 to Our Lady of Grace.

   Ella Cooler, Mary Church and Emma Bloom were standouts.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee soccer team defeated St. Stephens, 5-3.

Will Walters had two goals, Simon Mueller had two goals, and Izzy Banish had one.

  The  defense was led by Tyler Conover, Addison Trout and Carlos Coelle.  Nick Loeblein  had several saves.

Sacred Heart cross country’s Ben Childress placed second in a meet with  Forsyth Country Day, Greensboro Day, St. Pius Catholic and Summit School.

Sacred Heart’s girls tennis team defeated Ellis Middle, 5-4.

Rachel McCullough and Kyna Zaldivar won singles  McCullough/Zaldivar, Bree Whittington/Annie Tadiello and Ellie Cardelle/Mary Grace Cardelle won in doubles.
